Your downtown movie theaters struck a very positive note with me. Downtown was very safe even for a child of 8-10 years old. I attended First Baptist Church morning services ( located across from the YMCA) and from ages 8- 15 ( born 1946) stayed downtown alone through evening services. Ate at Morrisson's Cafeteria ( got a kick when they assumed I was with the family in front of or behind me), then maybe a double feature at the Joy or one each at Don and Strand or Sanger... plenty of window shopping, no vacant storefronts... church from 6:00 PM- 8:30 and wait at Penney's trolley stop. Same for Wed. night. Some great cafes too: Abalone's, Belmont Café.

I'm interested in stories about health care and hospitals in the 1960s. If you have any, please let me know. I'm working on a documentary.

That is correct. We lived in Sunset Acres back in the early 50's, and used to go there with our parents to watch the movies. There was a Dairy Queen right there too.

I was wondering if anyone here has, or knows of, access to pictures of Shreveport/Bossier City from the 50's. Drive Inns, mostly. I still eat at Griff's one of the best burgers in the area! And after reading all the posts in this thread, I'm surprised that no one mentioned LA Jewelry, and Pawn, or Nan Kings! I grew up in, and around Shreveport/Bossier City, born in 48, Ringgold, LA.

Thanks for the trip down Memory Lane. I worked at that Pak-a-Sak on Linwood across from Nickey's in the mid 60's and remember in particular a couple of waitresses there that used to come over to the store. One who later became a successful business woman after I went into the finance business and we crossed paths. Went to many of the local bars but my favorite hangout was the Cove Lounge out on Dilg League. The Cove was later bought by a retired Airman who changed the name to Big D's Cherry Blossom. I don't think it is even open now. Someone mentioned the Broadmoor Theatre, a movie house that used to show foreign and art films, and later went to straight porno. I think it closed after the advent of the internet.

Default Sand Piper - Cheyenne Lily's info

CL's entrance was on the backside of the bldg facing East in the parking lot. It was comprised of rustic wood facia to resemble a western boomtown saloon with 2nd story decking. CL was "created" to cash in on the "Urban Cowboy Craze" of the early 1980's and I suspect Merle was trying to copy the success of "COWBOYS" in Bossier which was the hot night spot at the time. I know the SP was going strong in the 1970's. FWIW.

I think they promoted the SP & CL as "two distinctive nightspots in one"...which really didn't make any sense from a marketing standpoint. CL's started out pretty good as I recall but then it started getting a really "mixed crowd" which caused a lot of the original patrons to go to Cowboys or other places that were getting established ...I seem to recall a place in Heart O' Bossier called: STUDEBAKER's or CHEVY's...and then there was MOE & JOE's which was where RALPH & KACOO's is today.
Cheyenne Lily's was definitely created to take advantage of the Urban Cowboy craze in 1980. Cowboy's came along later. I sang in a band that was at the Sand Piper and I remember when it was "remodeled" after the fire. It was only partially burned instead of the whole club because Merle only wanted to change the back. I worked at Adam's Rib at the Bossier Sheraton in the early 80's when it was a phenomenal draw for incredible entertainment and I remember Cowboys opened while I was there. I have often dreamed of finding all the regulars from Adam's Rib in a forum or Facebook group. GREAT bands that stayed for a month at a time like "Some People's Kids" and "Private Stock".
