I have asked mortgage companies, real estate agents, and attempted to view the "many" website regarding Louisiana/Bossier City property taxes. So far, the only thing I have been told and able to confirm that there is a homstead exemption for the first $75,000 of the value of the home. Is there anyone out there in cyber land that could please let me know what (ballpark number would be okay) the approximate property taxes would be on a $160,000 home? Please

I would ballpark and say the taxes are 1% of the amount above the homestead exemption (160K - 75K)*0.01 = $850. And I doubt it would be much more than $1,000, if even that. Beyond that ballpark, there are couple of posters on here who live in Bossier who could give the exact millage - I assumed 100 mills for simplicity.

Just to follow up on BRman's post and give the anal retentive no-kidding formula. The way you calculate property taxes in Louisiana (per the state's tax collection website) is you multiply 10% of your assessed value minus any exceptions, by the millage to get your tax liability. Each parish has their own millage value, and there are also some city taxes that vary depending on where you live. Assuming just a vanilla example with no other taxes tacked on it goes as follows:

Your home is assessed at 160K. 10% of that is 16,000. Your homestead exception is $7500, which comes off the 10% of assessed value. So that leaves you with $8500. Bear in mind that's right about what people in the northeast pay for property taxes a year, so here is where it pays to own a home in LA. You multiply that amount by the parish millage. I *think* for Bossier the millage is 83 but I can't remember. a millage is a fractional unit corresponding to .001.
So $8500 * 83 *0.001 = $705.50 property tax for the year. You can't beat that with a stick!
Let's say it was on the high end (100 mills) then it would be $850.
