I'll be starting a new job at LSUHSC-Shreveport in about a month's time and would like to find out about renting an apartment or townhouse. I've checked sites like apartment finder, but I'm not familiar with the area at all. I'd appreciate information on which parts of town to avoid. What is the commute like? Alternatively, would Bossier city be a better option? I'm not concerned about schools for kids (don't have any, none planned anytime soon). My main concerns are safety and a quiet area which is not too far away from everything else.

Thanks

Your job's location at LSUHSC is easily accessible to I-49 and not far from it's I-20. Head east into Bossier City, a plethora of apts and condo's as well; all price ranges but in decent safe areas. I would avoid anything west of LSUHSC or directly south of there. SE Shreveport is pretty good but even that area can be dicey nowadays. If you like older, try South Highlands/Madison Park (south of Kings Hwy, north of Pierremont and east of Fairfield. You must cross under I-49 to get there on Kings. Good luck to you and anymore questions we will try to help.

Does anyone know anything about Champion Lake apartments? Is it in a safe neighbourhood?

I used to live in Island Park. Island Park, Champion Lake, Riverwalk, and Reflections of Island Park are all apartment complexes situated in the same region off of Clyde Fant Parkway. They are kind of off by themselves, not really located in a neighborhood, they make up their own neighborhood of nice apartments. It's a very safe area; all are very nice apartment complexes and convenient to Shreveport's major shopping strip (Youree Dr). The commute will probably take 15-20ish minutes going Kings Hwy, more or less depending on traffic. They are located off a major parkway so noise might be an issue for a front unit, but if you get a unit in the back, you should be fine.

You mentioned "quiet" in your original post so I would also recommend checking out The Willows at Wright Island. They are probably a mile from Champion Lake, on the edge of a small neighborhood with a bayou and a "meadow" which is really just open green space and woods. I currently live there and really love it. Ducks and squirrels abound! Very safe, I walk between my and my fiance's apts at all hours with no concerns. I think they're a little less expensive and a little larger than Champion Lake, but they are older. Just another option maybe worth checking into.

The willows very nice, my cousins friend lived there. Nothing like having the bayou in your backyard.

I think Champion Lake apartments are wonderful and wish we had decided to live there instead of The Reserve. Stay away from The Reserve Apartments - I wish we had! Thank God we bought a house and got out of there. Good luck.
