Sioux falls is a small town. I get upset over hearing people complain about "safety". A certain level of "streetwise sense" should exist in everyone. I spend A LOT of time here working, but live in a major city, and have lived in many major metro areas. A person should watch their back, lock their doors, guard their purse, and be aware of their surroundings, wherever they live or frequent.

There are only petty crimes in Sioux Falls. How many murders do you have per week? The casino robberies could be avoided if they would get armed security like all big cities have in their businesses.

The more population a city gains, the more the crime will increase, but random crimes doesn't make a city unsafe. You can't get much safer than Sioux Falls, unless you want to live in the country.

To live anywhere where you have been thrown objects more than once is probably not a place to feel comfortable. If that happened to me I would not be happy there.

Where I live now in central MN it is so mellow, I have seen nothing suspicious. I even live around a lot of hispanics from California who look like maybe in past may have been slightly gang related. And with exception of some minor domestic disputes nothing bad goes on here. It is so dull here that I even get excited when I see news from bigger areas of stuff going on.

yes, i do think you're crazy for feeling unsafe in sioux falls.

unless you're talking about driving on icy roads during the winter months.

that can be rather unsafe. deadly, even.

I don't think you're crazy for feeling unsafe here. Sioux Falls wasn't bad in the early 90s but ever since maybe '96 or so has gotten to be a rougher looking town overall. I don't think it's because the city is getting bigger per se; I've been in bigger cities and have actually felt safer in some cases than in SIoux Falls. I think Sioux Falls is just attracting a scuddier crowd as opposed to most other cities in the same size range around the USA.

Sioux Falls does have crime.
It drives me nuts when people try and act like there is absolutely nothing illegal going on in Sioux Falls. lol
However, most of the crime is usually nothing violent.
There are a lot of alcohol and drug related crimes.
A lot of arguments on the streets...
The occasional drunk people staggering around.. (Including Myself)
Where I grew up, if that went on.. they would be arrested for P.I in a second. lol
Also, there are a lot of punk teenagers too.
Throwing stuff out of car windows... yelling at people walking... that sort of thing. "Troublemakers".
But really I would never say I feel "unsafe"...
There have been a few times up around N.Cliif that I crossed the street at night.. just in case. lol
But I think it is mainly just petty crimes and kids talking smack.. stuff like that.
If you can handle things like that.. No big deal.
And also understand that some people are less fortunate than others.
My advice would be.. try not to be so judgemental and remember that just because these people are homeless,
Does not always mean they are out for trouble.
In general Sioux Falls is not the place for me, but I have to say..... you are safe.
USE COMMON SENSE. lol

Trailhiker, are you still on this forum? I assume Sioux Falls suburbs don't offer all you need? Have you considered a suburb of a very large metro area? Like Minneapolis-St. Paul, some suburbs have very low crime, bus service to airport & most areas, jobs, sidewalks, rent by month apartments or extended stay hotels. And hotels within 10 mi of airport have free shuttle. Best wishes.

Sioux falls is a very safe town. There's bad people here but the criminal subculture is different. The gangbangers here are moslty losers and literal bums from small towns that idolize real gangsters from big cities.

Unlike other places where the gangs and gangsters are organized, have lots of money and kill people in front of innocent people in broad daylight just to prove a point and everyone in the hood knows who the killers are but they are too scared and trapped to tell on them.

SF is just completely different comparing any run down area in SF to any ghetto in chicago or even omaha is like comparing denver to somalia. Its hilarious. If SF scares you I don't think there are many places on that planet that won't have you terrified and peeing yourself.

You will not find a community offering what Sioux falls has with a lower crime rate. I'm sorry to tell you this. I live in Omaha, Ne which is about 4x the population but probably 1.5-2 times the crime rate.. surprisingly, Omahas crime rate is considered low by national standards but Sioux Falls is hands down a safer community.. yet, I feel safe in Omaha because I don't get myself into situations that could get me into trouble..

If you don't feel safe there, you probably won't feel safe anywhere. But at least you have a very low risk in the great city of Sioux Falls.
