I'm glad you are proud of your city. People are scrambling to Sioux Falls exemplified by it' tremendous growth. There's no such growth in Sioux City for obvious reasons.
If you've ever seen our orpheum you would know what a truly fantastic theatre is. It's literally like 10 times the size loom it up. Also new York city to hinton? Ok have you even seen fourth or pearl street within the past month. We have a casino too unlike Sioux falls and not only is it a casino. It's a hard rock that draws many people into downtown. Also I just mentioned very few bands that come to Sioux City because the hard rock and it's convenient location between Omaha abd Sioux falls. we have many bands that come and play in the summer and even winter like Florida Georgia line kiss and a BUNCH more. Besides I just saw how people from the Sioux falls area were just pissed because we were taking concert venue with our hard rock when they had just built the Denny Sanford premier center. New York to hinton. That made me laugh. Typical attitude of some of the people in Sioux falls. They look down on Sioux City without even probably comparing them in the first place. Sioux falls automatically wins. Also you just say how your nightlife is better without any actual proof exept one picture so it looks like you have nothing to show me how Sioux falls nightlife is better. If you can prove to me and argue me to see how Sioux falls is better then I'll take it. But bashing Sioux City with no evidence just makes it look like your salty and want a cheap shot.

Shay53 - I was going to come down to Sioux City and check out downtown but having second thoughts if I'm going to get the third degree for being from Sioux Falls.

Look. Notice how I say some of the people from Sioux falls. Those who constantly bash us. I may come off a little harsh but I'm just tired of my city being bashed by outsiders. You won't get judged by us. Our people are very friendly. Ill even welcome you. I've met people from Sioux falls at different events like this rappel or a hockey game ect and always greeted them with a smile and a hi. One of my best friends lives in tea and really likes Sioux falls but that doesn't get between us. We even went to Sioux falls to hang out with him. It's just the people who are constantly bashing my city on this cite that I am upset with and if they come to Sioux City I will welcome them too. So im sorry if i come off as harsh against Sioux falls it's just I got really tired of those bashing our city. I just thought my city should be defended. If you want to check our city out you can. If you don't want to nobodys gonna make you. But your welcome to. I honestly think this argument is probably getting nasty too and we all need to bury it.

I'm looking to possibly move to Sioux Falls & went here to check it out. I'm from Seattle & always hear how wonderful midwest people are. I see some passion in some of you! But..you ALL live in SD. Perhaps sell your experience instead. I'm a liberal, vegetarian, outdoor type. Non drinker, non smoker, except legal pot. Grew up in Seattle. Moved to OR 15 yrs ago, Portland for 10 yrs then Salem, OR 5 yrs ago. Crime statistics? I'm in a "horrible" area yet never felt uncomfortable. Never done meth but am in meth city! Heck, never met anyone who's done meth! Like High School it's all subjective.
Pheww..long winded! My question. Will I be accepted (I will leave weed in OR!) by locals? Is there driving schools for snow? Do I need to have a storm shelter/basement? Is there sustainable, local food marts? I saw Sat Market but during winter?

I live in Sioux Falls and have been to both Portland and Salem. I certainly would prefer Sioux Falls to Salem, but that's just me. Portland is a larger metro area so can't really compare. What I like about Sioux Falls is that it is about three hours from Omaha and Minneapolis...and Des Moines is about four I guess if you need to get away to a larger place.

It's difficult to say if you will like it. I retired and moved from the San Francisco Bay area, where I lived for 35 years. It all depends on what you are looking for. I've been here 10 months and I think it beats the Bay Area by a mile in almost all areas except perhaps number of high caliber opera performances. If that's important to you, then don't move. Ha.

It's a metro area of 250 and growing quickly, so not a tiny town... It has the most restaurants per capita than anywhere I"ve ever been and a great number of very good restaurants....you might miss the better weather an trees, etc....it an be pretty crappy weather here from middle of Nov. to April....and I don't mean the Bay Area whips definition of bad weather which is 50's...I mean it can get COLD...and snow...personally I don't mind it, but I can also get away during the winter if I so choose...

Generally, it's pretty conservative, but there are a number of more liberal folks..probably on the "younger" side. I don;t think anyone will give you a bad time about it, but just so you know...oh, tons of good choices in terms of grocery stores, health food stores, coop market, farmers markets doing the season, etc...I wouldn't worry about that...

I'd be happy to answer any other questions...

Thank you! I'm not into Opera or on "the younger side" except inside . I'm excited to check it out. Snow doesn't bother me but we shut down entire coast if there's a "threat" of 1/2 inch! I also have 5 dogs & 4 cats..animal friendly? I love the parks & would love to explore with 3 if dogs..other 2 are 16yr old Chihuahuas.

Well, I dunno if acts allow 5 dogs and 4 cats, but someone probably does. I know there are dog parks and there are rural areas close by also. How do you get by with that many pets in Salem?

I love it here, but don't be naive. Meth and heroin use (and associated crime) is on the rise in Sioux Falls and the surrounding countryside - it's been on the news a lot lately.

Also, South Dakota is VERY republican christian in most areas east river. The nice thing about the Midwest, though, is that people don't try to force that in your face quite so much as is the case in the South. So I've appreciated that! But Democrats are so scarce in this state that in many areas there is no Democrat challenger to any republican candidate. So be aware that in most places you'd be a minority.

Keep looking at Sioux Falls. But you also might want to look at Rapid City, Spearfish and Vermillion, which are the more "Liberal" communities in the state. Or look at some communities in Minnesota, too.

Sioux Falls does have a nice little food co-op. I'm a member. But it is struggling financially, and isn't nearly as varied in what it carries as you may be used to. There is also the statewide on-iine food co-op, which has monthly distributions in Sioux Falls, Brookings, Rapid and Spearfish ( sdlocalfood.org/shop/ ) Vermillion has an excellent Farmer's Market - other communities probably do, too.

There are many good reasons to move to South Dakota; it's a wonderful place to live. But do so with your eyes wide open.

Thank you 601 for the suggestions. I will be loading up RV Spring 2017 and seeing where I fit in. My biggest concern has been being a liberal, animal lovin vegetarian! I'm not in my 20's so figuring things out takes a little longer.
Burkmere..I own my homes so I've never had problems with my pets. I will buy a home where ever I end up. In the last 3 years I've had 3 large dogs pass away..2 very lg boxers & my Newfoundland. I've since gotten small, old dogs. I have 1 husky, 1 jack russell, 1 beagle & 2 Chihuahua. All 12-17 yrs old. Makes life alot easier. I lost 2 cats last month so the 4 left are 16-19. I will not be getting any more! Hoping by caring for these senior pets & giving them the best possible end of life..Karma Gods will find someone for ME when the time comes

Homes are not cheap here so do your research.
