Just wondering if anyone can name a few good hospitals in Sioux Falls. We are coming to SD for a visit this summer. I am interested in Rapid City (where I did get great info on another thread) and Sioux Falls at this time. I am hoping for info from a patient and/or employee point-of-view. I will be looking for a nursing position. Thanks !

Sanford Health, Sanford USD Medical Center Sioux Falls, South Dakota

HI AJ, all I have to offer is just a bit of generic info on it. Sanford is getting to be quite major in South Dakota. I'm not sure if the link shows it, but they also have a children's hospital and they have a surgical center. Since I've been a patient there, I can tell you they are top-notch. I think it used to be Sioux Valley.

Avera McKennan Hospital & University Health Center Sioux Falls, South Dakota - Avera Health

Avera is the other one and they've taken over McKennan. Thanks to the link, I probably didn't mix it up THIS time. I've never been a patient there, but Avera is also what we have in Mitchell and they are also very good.

Jammie is right with Sanford and Avera.
My doctor is with Sanford. I'm happy with it. I have a one on one relationship with my doctor. I'm sure its the same with Avera.
You'd be happy at either Sanford & Avera!
Sanford has a children's hospital here, and is planning on a large research campus in SW Sioux Falls. Much of this couldn't be possible with Mr. Sanford's very generous donation.
I've heard great things about Avera McKennan as well.

My family has pretty much always worked with McKennan and never had any problems, I have a couple friends and my wife works there as well if I ever decide to go to a doctor I'm sure McKennan will be it....

Hi Everyone - wow, thanks for the info, opinions and links. I can see that I am going to be busy - better pack a suit for all the resume leaving/info gathering I am going to be doing shortly. As always, I do appreciate it (now getting quite excited to visit).

I can tell you as an Army guy living in Sioux Falls who is use to military medical care, that I think both hospital are top notch. My entire family is seen through Avera and we absolutely love our primary doctor. The whole practice seems very professional and having a 2 year old presents a challenge they always seem MORE than prepared to handle. The urgent care clinics are amazing and the staffs are all you could hope for in friendliness.

We have been referred outside our primary doctor on multiple occasions and without thought, they have referred to Sanford if they thought their doctors were the way to go. When I have seen the Sanford specialists, they were great and worked hand and hand with my provider without any issues being from the "other" hospital. I haven't been to the Sanford Children's hospital, but my son has stayed on the Avera pediatric floor when he had a bout with the croup. They were BY FAR the most compassonate staff of nurses and care providers I have had the pleasure of being around.

For myself, I have had a handfull of issues since coming back from Afghanistan and not only were they able to get a hold of everything relatively quickly working with each other (hospital wise), they were even making calls to the Military side of the house to see if what I had going on was a trend that they might be able to help expedite matters with. I'm feeling great these days and I owe it all to the professionals at both of the hospitals here in Sioux Falls.

If anyone here is associated with either of those two hospitals, let me say that I think the world of them both and their staff of professionals. The medical care provided by them is, in and of itself, a big drawing point to moving to Sioux Falls.

Hope that helped...

Both places have good medical care and one would be fine going to either McKennan or Sanford. I usually go to McKennan if I were to have a major medical issue, which I have been very lucky not having the need to go to a hospital. With my mother working there, I give most of my business to McKennan. Despite that, my parents have received good medical care at McKennan when they had surgeries or when my Dad had his cancer treatments.

My eye doctor that I have seen for many years is affiliated with Sanford and she is an awesome eye doctor that is knowledgeable and great with people.

For a town it's size, Sioux Falls has amazing medical facilities. Both hospitals are great. We used McKennan when we lived in SF and had wonderful experiences.

The hospitals in Sioux Falls serve more than the just "the town". Think "Regional".
We are 1 1/2 hours away, & family members have used both hospitals......including the VA Hospital, also.........

The hospitals serve a wide area and serve pretty much most of eastern SD along with parts of central SD, parts of northern Nebraska, NW Iowa, and western Minnesota. Hospitals in Pierre, Aberdeen, etc. often send their patients to the Sioux Falls hospitals for more complex procedures. There are some people from Sioux City, IA, which has two hospitals, who come to Sioux Falls for medical procedures.
