How crazy would it be (given the cold and possible bad weather) to come for my first visit to Sioux Falls sometime in late Feb., early March?? I would fly in and likely rely on public transportation in Sioux Falls (I currently live near Atlanta and am not used to driving on slick roads quite yet...I did live in CO for a number of years, and was raised in the Northeast, so I've done it, just not recently). How is public transportation (busses, cabs) in Sioux Falls?

The reason I want to come visit so early is because, if all goes well, I want to move there in May/June. The sooner the better so I can get my new life started! I can't really see my way clear to visit this November or December, so it would have to happen around the first of the year.

Thanks in advance for your responses and advice! :-)

I don't think it'd be crazy at all considering your timeline. Normally I'd recommend that you visit during the spring, summer, autumn cause it's beautiful in Sx. Falls then. Winter is kinda blah. But since you seem to be quite confident that's where you want to live anyway, it shouldn't be a problem.

It's already warming up here by March and I think we're in for a nice winter.

Average Weather for Sioux Falls, SD - Temperature and Precipitation

Just bring warm clothes and you should be fine.

I'll let someone else answer the transportation question cause I've never used Sx. Falls public transit.

Default Winter Visit

Hi acorn lady. We are in a similar boat with fall/winter visits. We've seen Rapid City (and love it) and we're due to see Sioux Falls just as soon as schedules permit. Now, it wasn't as cold as it gets in RC when we visited (Oct. 3-5), but it was in the mid-30s, rainy and snowy and there was a good amount of fog. We still went out and about and did everything we wanted to do. I figure if I love a place when it isn't thought of as the optimum time, then it is going to be a good fit. Plus, if a person possibly can, it is a very good idea to pay a visit just to make sure it is the right fit. So, I agree with Jammie, I think you have a great idea and I do not think it is crazy at all.

Acorn, that's great! It wouldn't be crazy at all. I wouldn't be too worried about the roads... they aren't slick the entire winter, but I can see where you would be concerned. Renting a car might be a better bet... As long as you have common sense, drive slow, do not brake hard, and always watch out for the other drivers. Then again, I'm used to it.
Here is a link to Sioux Falls Transit which operates the city bus system:
siouxfallstransit.org: Fixed Route Service
I've never used Sioux Falls Transit, but they have many bus stops in SF. However, I did notice that they do not stop at the airport, which is crazy. I looked at Google Maps, and the closest bus stops from the airport are about a mile walking distance. That really surprises me.
There are also numerous cabs companies:
-All Day Taxicab
-Apple Cab 24/7
-City-Wide Taxi
-Sioux Falls Taxi Service
-Taxi Co of Sioux Falls
-Yellow Cab Co Inc

Thank you so much for your responses! I appreciate all the advice and links, cab info., etc. I would love to feel comfortable renting a car (that is how I usually handle it when I travel, but I always have travelled in the spring or summer), but the thought of possibly slipping around in an unfamiliar city makes me a little uncomfortable. I'll probably split the travel between bus and cab, depending on what I'm doing, and where I'm going. Of course, if it looks like it is being a mild winter there, as Jammie predicted, maybe I'll just get the rental car anyway.

I wish I could come sooner. I'm so excited about this, I'm actually starting to dream about it at night...very pleasant dreams indeed!

Thank you so much! I will do some research on my own, and if I need some help along the way, I'll drop you a line. I expect that the internet will be one of my best friends in the next few months...
