I like the aspects of both sports NFL and MLS and follow them regularly. They all are very talented athletes.
But back to the main Q
Why has soccer never caught on in the United States?
I think the biggest reason is TV $$ - in soccer they can't break to commercial every five minutes.
Without that revenue stream it's a tough sell to advertisers. Thus keeps soccer from breaking into the US mainstream.
You'd think with all the corp logos on the shirts and stadium names, that would be enough commercialism....
Seriously though, this country is more for commercialism and soccer could just never find a way to capture what the Big Four have.
But it will come eventually, as it's slowly starting to establish itself among the big time American leagues. It may never be another EPL, but at least it could compete with NHL and MLB right now.

With MLB? No way. Not even close. I understand some folks don't like baseball, but don't let that blind you. When you look at the attendance and revenue figures between the leagues, it's not even close. They're not on the same planet.
The European leagues are just as commercial. They plaster commercial messages on uniforms and around the pitch that are easily seen on TV. If you want to see game highlights on your favorite club's website, you have to pay for that. The EPL is very aggressive about keeping unauthorized material off YouTube in order to force folks to the pay services. If you don't think the EPL and other big European leagues care as much about cash as the Big Four U.S. leagues, you have your head buried in the sand. After all, those transfer fees are not cheap.
yeah you are right, but soccer doesn't let commercialism stop play like what happens in the nfl
True, but the NFL doesn't plaster commercial messages on uniforms and around the field for viewers to see during the game. Both the NFL and EPL are about the money. They just go about it differently.
I think that was his point grm.
The NFL would be much more enjoyable to watch (for me anyway) if it wasnt 30 seconds of play and 5 mins of ads straight after. He has potential to be a good sport, whereas right now its just 5 hours of advertisements it feels like. It would be much better to have billboards and advertising on jerseys like real football has and keep the game flowing.

Maybe not ON the field (in most cases) but certainly around it. They're the names of some stadiums, their are ads around the walls and monitors, and let's not forget "Today's game is sponsored by...".
And sure MLS may not be as close to MLB as I made it seem, but baseball's not gettin' any more popular...
And BrianH... ENOUGH WITH THIS "Real football" B.S.!
There are three different sports in this world called "football" and advertisements on NFL uniforms would look horrible.
Oh man ive been spanked, i best stop saying Real Football!!!!!! It is real football, soccer is a stupid word so I have to point out when I am actually talking about real football or american football.
Maybe not you, but some of your homies from generations ago did. The word is not of American origin, so get off our backs for using it.
