Just out of curiosity, but what are the average attendances in MLS stadiums? I recently saw a part of some game (completely forgotten who against who) and I was surprised by the large crowd.

Varies by team. Some sell out while others struggle to draw. You'll see anywhere from 6,000 to 30,000 depending on the team.

18k or so. You will see crowds in the 30ks in Seattle and smaller crowds in San Jose who is playing in a stadium that only holds 10k until their stadium gets built
Ah okay, thanks. The numbers seem to be on par with the average attendance at the French Ligue 1. I'm positively surprised by these numbers: I somehow keep on thinking soccer in the United States is horribly unpopular and is played in desolate, empty stadiums .

Time to set aside my prejudices .
We have a country of 300 million people so something can not be liked by the majority of the country and still be popular enough to sustain. The MLS has a hardcore fan base and enough of a casual fan base that the league is stable and doing really well. We have a similar attendance average to both the National Hockey League and National Basketball Association and will probably average higher within a couple of years.

Definitely. MLS has gone from strength to strength over the past several seasons. I just watched a couple of great games this past weekend on Malaysian telly: Sporting KC knocked off San Jose 1-0 and Portland drew 3-3 with Red Bull New York. Portland is drawing good size (and noisy) crowds. Sporting should have larger crowds now that they are in a bigger stadium.
That's really a very decent average . According to this website (http://www.european-football-statistics.co.uk/attn.htm) , you'd make the 7th place in Europe, after Germany (av. 42,500), England (av. 34,151), Spain (av. 28,286), Italy (24,957), France (av. 20,089) and the Netherlands (19,608).
But looking by your growing rate, you probably will surpass the Netherlands and France in the not-to-distant future.
Apologies for going off topic but the French stadiums are very small. They will build bigger ones within the next 10 years i think.
