Okay, it came from a fan contest in the Mercury News but I'm not sure how many suggested it before being picked by management. Fair enough.

it's not that DET couldn't support a privately-financed team; it's that many other cities are better equipped on the margin to give incentives/infrastructure improvements - MLS team owners are generally not plutocrats- they will take what they can get to minimize their own out-of-pocket spend.

Detroit is Bankrupt, But Building a $444 Million Stadium
What the above states is that a new arena is going to be built in downtown Detroit for the Red Wings costing 444 million dollars. Building a soccer friendly stadium in Detroit will or would not be influenced by Detroit politics in a negative way.

you quoted an editorial opposing the use of state funds for this stadium...

Yes, goes to show you that even with the CITY being bankrupt, life, sports and entertainment goes on as normal. A 444 million dollar arena and entertainment area are being built regardless of the financial state of the city, so when people say you can't because the CITY is broke, well then here you go...

Looks like Garber has paid out the plan that the MLS will have 24 teams by 2020. So that means an additional 4 teams will be coming online in the next 7 years.

Will be interesting to see who gets them. Here are my bets:

Miami
Atlanta
Minneapolis
St. Louis

Fusions that could lead to MLS worthy teams?

Pittsburgh Riverhounds + Harrisburg City Islanders

Carolina Railhawks + Charlotte Eagles + Wilmington Hammerheads

Tampa Bay Rowdies + Orlando City

Best for MLS is to do it like the Dutch Eredivisie (18 teams) and have a 2nd league with 6-9 teams in each conference.

I'd love for Miami to have a football team. Miami Fusion FC failed miserably.
