NYC will happen if a stadium is funded. Garber wants it. Orlando has plans and is backed by deep pockets and a British group is trying to make some waves in Tampa. There's been persisting rumors that Chivas USA will re-brand and move to San Diego.
We're getting a USL Pro club in Phoenix next season. That is the first stepping stone for tapping the Phoenix market. It will probably be a hard sell but I hope it can take root. MLS has it's eye on Phoenix due to demographics and population but it's a risky & fickle market.
How on earth can a team up sticks and relocate to another city! There would be riots anywhere else on earth!
Easy. Just take pack up everything and move.
This is America. Sports teams relocate all the time here.... it happened with the original San Jose Quakes moving to Houston to become the Dynamo. And there wouldn't be riots, just some resentment for the owner who moved the team at the very worse.
I've heard rumblings that the MLS is interested in putting a team in North Carolina but that the Raleigh-Durham area is the "frontrunner" for a team rather than Charlotte.

So what did the San Jose fans do? Just let it happen?

What can they do? It happens here from time to time. Usually over finances and/or stadium. Sometimes they move out of necessity other times another city offers a sweet deal on a new stadium and the owner moves operations. It's that simple. No one can control that. Sometimes the ownership is kind enough to leave the name of the franchise with the city so someone else can come along and pick up where the former owner left off (ala the Cleveland Browns).
Nice map find. The only club I would like to see relocate is Chivas. Maybe to San Diego?? I really don't see MLS working in Cleveland. And, Miami and Tampa have already failed once. Anyone remember when Rochester, NY was supposed to be the next big MLS city? Whatever happened with that?
