Seriously, the MLS logo isn't as bad as people are making it out to be and I do think it has to do with it being new. Seeing the logo compared side by side with other league logos help solidifies my opinion, but again, I also stated earlier that I prefer minimalism which is essentially how I ranked them with aesthetics being a second close criteria.
If I didnt know what NHL was I wouldnt know what it was. I have many friends who have no idea what MLS stands for so sticking a logo with just MLS on it isnt going to make them think Major League Soccer. The badge is too bland. Youd have to be deaf and blind to know instantly think Hockey when you see NHL, the same cannot be said for MLS.
As for the other's, theyre company brands. People go out of their way to buy a Ford, Pepsi and eat at McDonalds. Their brand and logo's sell itself. MLS is a relatively obscure league in America that is practically begging for people to come to games.

Look, the point was that plenty of logos or emblems that are "iconic" take time to get to the point to where it doesn't have to be specific for people to know what it is and even have to ask.
Honestly, the previous (but still current until this season ends) logo was TOO literal, the other extreme.
A foot kicking a ball. How original and imaginative.
While I agree with your point, MLS doesn't really mean anything to most people yet. I understand this is how it was for the NHL, also, but I guess it depends on how the logo will be used.
Pepsi used to include cola in its logo, the first ford had "motors" and McD used to talk about hamburgers. Logos definitely evolve, but I just think it would be good to include a ball (or soemthing) in the logo if it is supposed to mean something to the unknowledgable. If not, whatever. Either way, the logo will not affect the growth of the league, imo, and I don't really hate it...I just thought it could be better.
