I just dont understand the new 24 team tournament? Why are there 3rd place Team/countries still playing. They only won 1 game and still get to play. What is the Euro Cup 2016 about?

Because of the expanded field they need more teams to fill out the knockout bracket. Hopefully this is a one time format and they revert back to 16 in '20.

If you want 24 teams, you need to have 8 groups of 3 teams to make it fair.

I'm not sure fairness weighs heavily on the minds of the organizers, but that's actually not a bad idea.

I always rank on American sports for having long seasons and then letting half the teams into the "playoffs" but this is even worse. Just about only 30% of the teams are eliminated from the group stages. Yawn.

really what's the point? so anti-climatic the group stages this time around. Copa has been a way better tournament and better played as well. (So Far)

The Copa has not been a better tournament, the Copy has been pretty much a snooze fest till the last few games. The final was unwatchable the 2nd half.

The whole final game was a disappointment! Another 0-0 tie ending in penalty kicks. Messi needs to suck it up, put back on the Argentina jersey, but top management needs to find a young attacking talent that can light a fire under that team and give Messi a little more talent to work with.

They expended the tournament to 24 teams.
In order to have a round of 16th the 4 best numbe 3 advance.

REASON

MORE MATCHES, MORE MONEY

you're kidding right? the euros have been a total snooze fest, only a few games with any passion. The balance of the copa was way better.

too many small teams playing boring defense

too many teams advancing (70%)

meaningless first round games b/c most are getting into the next round

you euros couldn't be more biased against anything that's not European
