Does anyone know if a mini tourney of World Cup also-rans has ever happened before?
This would be controversial, many people already thinking it is a pathetic money-grab that soothes US soccer feelings. On one hand it sounds kind of fun, on the other, it is disrespectful to the real World Cup teams and spirit of competition. And it could take some revenue and attention away from the Russia WC.
I love futbol but if this tourney happened in June, I wouldn't want to spoil my appetite for the real deal in July. I'd probably only watch a little.
World Cup is basically FIFA event. They will not allow any rival event which can corner away TV viewership. Plus all world anyways is glued to TV sets for the main event. All clubs are at rest, so are national teams.

This is just a proposal !!! This will be laughed upon by every country which they think will be participating. No club will release their players for this rubbish/loser tournament.This proposal will go to dustbin.

Every match of the World Cup is already scheduled. The release of players is something to consider and it's worth noting this is merely a proposal, an idea, that some media outlets are running with. The idea that there was some type of conspiracy to draw attention away from the draw is laughable.
