Damn, if not for the Ronaldo goal, Luxembourg would be 2 points back of Portugal and 1 back of Serbia for second. A team on the rise. Another team on the rise; Kazakhstan. They still have a ways to go but there’s some positives to take out of that match. They went down really early in the game (I think Ukraine scored like 4 minutes in) and they gave up the lead in extra time only to come back with a goal themselves. More good news for them: they are currently locked in a 3 team pile up at the bottom of the group with Finland, and Bosnia, 2 back of Ukraine for second on 4 points. Nobody in that pile is catching France for first, but second for anyone else isn’t out of the cards. And really the Kazakhs have probably gotten 3 of their 4 most difficult games out of the way with the home game vs France and the 2 games vs Ukraine. It’s a bunch of Finland and Bosnia the rest of the way for the Kazakhs, who I doubt the Kazakhs are fearing after 3 games in 4 against France and Ukraine. Is it likely they finish second?? Probably not. But at least them and Luxembourg seem to be taking a step in the right direction.
2 teams I was high on when I woke up this morning, but are now selling their stock; Cyprus and Ukraine. I talked about Ukraine somewhat above but they have 4 draws in 4 games played against a pretty weak group of teams that is not good. And this coming after they made a nice run to the round of 16 at Euro’s but they only had 1 regulation win in 5 matches at that competition.
Cyprus I still think would’ve been 3rd behind Russia and Croatia anyways, but with those 2 playing out a draw, and Slovenia and Slovakia playing out a draw as well, all the 99th ranked nation had to do was beat a team about 40 spots lower then them in the rankings and they’d be tied for first at more than the quarter pole....and they blew it!!!
Go Sweden Go, beat the Bread Makers of Iberia . . . .
