My husband and I are thinking to relocate to Hilton Head after spending our vacations there. We do have two school age children. It seems like the Island has what we are looking for - the beautiful beaches and nature, nice weather, miles and miles of trails, tons of sports for the kids after school, slower pace of life, and good restaurants.

1- How are the job market and the salaries in Hilton Head? We are two professionals, but we are not necessary looking into professional jobs.

2- Is HH a good place to raise children?

3- Any feedbacks about Port Royal Plantation?

4- Any feedback about St-Francis Catholic School?

5 - Is there a general sense of community in town?

6- Does HHI loose its appeal after living there for a while?

Thank you for your feedback!

In season, HHI is NOT slow paced, let's be clear about that up front! It may be slower paced than some places in the northeast, but by local standards, I woudn't say it is. When it's "off season", it's dead.

The community is basically a hodge-podge of folks from Ohio, PA & NJ, with a few locals mixed in. Needless to say, that mix doesn't lend itself that well to a sense of "community".

Job wise, the service industry rules, and along with that comes very low pay. At this time, the outlook for professional employment is grim at best. A quick search through jobs database Job Search | one search. all jobs. Indeed.com will show you that.

Port Royal is one of the older "Plantations" on the Island, and the age of the homes will show that. New construction on Island is insanely expensive, but slightly more affordable in Bluffton.

Hope this helps!

It's well worth a trip to check it out for yourself. No matter what, you'll have great restaurants and decent shopping. We tend to visit off-season when it's quiet, and simply LOVE it.

Hum, not a very positive outlook of HH ... Thank you for the link to the jobs search website :-)
If you know some local families working in HH, what kind of jobs are they holding?

I don't know for sure, but based on our several visits, I'd say the vast majority of jobs are in hospitality/restaurants. There are several major name resorts on the island (Marriott, Hilton, Crowne Plaza, Westin). There are plenty of services on the island, but no traditional "industry" or call centers, etc. Some locals make a living by fishing. Otherwise, retail comes to mind, as there is a mall on the island and quite a lot of specialty shops, etc.
