I spent the majority of my life in upstate SC and now in Charlotte. It all depends on what you want. If you want a coastal town, I would look more towards SC, if you want a city, Charlotte and Raleigh are ahead of everyone else in job opportunities and other offerings. That being said, Greenville and Columbia are nice places to live and can provide good opportunities depending on the industry. Columbia is often overlooked because they don't appear is a lot of media "lists" (which are jokes anyway) but it is a great town and for real estate investors, is on the upswing.
Depends on what YOU want. What kind of city do you want to live in? What kind of activities do you like to do in your spare time? Do you like Metro, Suburb or Rural?
Born in Asheville, Lived in Hickory, Grew up in Charleston, Went to College in Charlotte, also Lived on Cape Hatteras for a while. By far my two favorites out of that list are Asheville and Charleston. I'd say overall, it depends on your lifestyle, I love to fish and take my kids fishing and you just have more of that available in and around Charleston, so my vote goes to Coastal SC.
I've lived in Charleston with a business in North Charleston and resided in Isle of Palms and Mount Pleasant. I moved to Raleigh with a company transfer.
The city/state characteristics had nothing to do with the choice, "It's not personal, it's business."
If picking one vs other I would consider taxes on retired income to some degree, but otherwise Mt Pleasant or Hilton Head would win over Raleigh or the Wilmington Beaches strip.
I noticed the wealth in SC is opposite of NC. NC’s wealth is concentrated inland while SC’s is on the coast. Coastal NC is one of the most backwoods places I’ve seen on the east coast.

NC wins in every category imo. (Not everyone can live on or near Isle of Palms, St. John's, SC coastal areas with million $ plus homes); unrealistic. Just the same as not everyone can live on the NC coast. High cost of living on any coast, east or west. Both states have some crowded run down areas. SC has more unbearable humidity around Charleston. NC has more coastal hurricanes.
Overall state for state, NC has more to offer from the coast to the mountains.

It's interesting that SC is more like FL and the northeastern states in that respect.

You haven't been to Asheville lately Ziggy. There's more wealth in these mountains (and the coast), many 2nd, and 3rd, homes most which are 'hidden' from sight in the mountains, other than from the air. Very private and secluded. And, well protected.
