Hi! I presently live in Greenville but for personal reasons I'm considering moving to a certain area of which Laurens is a part of. I'm over 50, my life is simple, I don't go out much, I guess my main requirements would be a place that has some stores, a library and a nice park or two, BUT I would like to be a town that has some "personality" and/or "charm". A couple of weeks ago I went through/around Laurens with a friend but he doesn't know the town well so we didn't get to see much, and what I did see didn't tell me much. Next, we went to Clinton, around the college and downtown, and it seemed a little cuter to me... but there isn't even a Walmart there. After that we went to Newberry and I liked it a little better but it got dark before I could really see enough of it, so if anyone lives or has lived in any of these towns in recent times I would appreciate some general info about them, such as if there are any yearly festivals or local attractions to enjoy.

Newberry seems to offer a fair amount of the basics for a smaller college town. They do have the "Opera House" for touring shows, and their little downtown seemed quaint with the shops, though we drove thru that area on a Sunday and seemed about everything was closed (sorry, transplant still getting used to some of the "traditions" down here lol) but for it's size it seemed nice enough.
But from there, it's a short drive to get to Lake Murray, the Sumter Nat'l Forest is nearby with some parks, and maybe a 20+min drive to Chapin has a larger Labor Day festival/parade as well.

Thanks ranger17, your reply sort of confirms my own first impression.

I came here earlier and someone with the name Florentine or something like that had replied also about Laurens and Clinton, but now I came back to reply and those posts are gone... I wonder why... Well, if you're reading this I want to thank you too because I found the input helpful as well.

And if anyone else wants to add anything please do, I'm still interested in reading other comments.

I live in Columbia, but we are considering moving closer to your area of the state in time. Laurens would be a consideration for us as it's a small town, yet close to both Spartanburg and Greenville. Clinton might be too small for us. Really, I think my wife would be just as happy even further in the upstate like pickens or Walhalla. Newberry is still too close to the Midlands for us.
