I was going to move to Union County NC, untill I learned of their Corpral Punishment used on the children in school. Is this form of child abuse practiced anywhere in SC?
Office of Civil Rights Data on Corporal Punishment
According the the OCR data from the 2002-03 school year, recently released, South Carolina does allow children to be corporally punished at school. In that school year, 2,781 incidents corporal punishment were reported to the Office of Civil Rights.
You may not want to write off SC just yet. I've been looking into Greenville for a possible relocation, and I was pretty surprised when I read your post about corporal punishment in the Carolinas. With two small children, this got my attention. In Massachusetts, this is unheard of.
I did a quick Google search and was shocked to find that corporal punishment is legal in 23 (or 27?) states, including Colorado, Florida, and Pennsylvania. That's half the states! I had no idea!
Anyway, I read on one of the sites that in SC, state law leaves it up to each school district/county as to whether or not to use corporal punishment. So although the state as a whole may allow it, many school districts do not. I believe Greenville County is one of the counties that does not allow it. If I'm wrong, someone please correct me. I will be looking into this further for my own peace of mind.
Sorry for the long post, but I didn't want you to be dissuaded from moving to SC based on this issue alone. It may not be an issue for you at all, depending on which county you move to. I'm not sure if the same is true for NC.
please learn to spell it, if you are going to write about it so much: it's CORPORAL, not CORPRAL.
