Anyone know what the construction is on E Wesmark and South Pike behind Staples is going to be? Looks like more retail/office suites but maybe a tenant is already in the works as a condition of construction. (??)

I see that building going up there, it's not very large though. I have no idea what that is, I will try to get a closer look this week.

While car shopping recently I stopped by Nissan of Sumter. While chatting with one of the salesman he informed me that the new owners will be moving the dealership down broad st next to Sumter D.C.J.R in the near future to get out of Jones 'automall' area. I also noticed the used car dealer between Sumter DCJR and Honda Motorcycles is clearing their lot. I wonder if Nissan bought that property to build a new location

I guess they want to separate themselves from the Jones brand, and create their own identity. Good luck to them.

When they do move the old lot would be a great location for Jones or another automotive group to bring a new brand to sell in Sumter. Kia/Hyundai would do well here since their are so many sonatas, souls, and optimas on Sumter roads already

Yes, I agree with that.

I see construction have started on the TRU hotel by Hilton. And McLaughlin Ford already have new trucks out there on their new location. I saw at least four F250's out there by the coming soon sign.

That site is 2.77 acres. I do not know what Publix's specification is for acreage.

That's probably enough for a good size store there. I did the acres to square feet conversion and that was big enough to fit a 120,661.2 square feet building. I saw that their stores range from 28,000 sq. ft. to 61,000 sq. ft. I got those numbers from the Publix Real Estate web site.

Publix has seven prototypes:
  • 28m (28,000 square feet)
  • 39m (39,000 square feet)
  • 45m (45,000 square feet)
  • 49m (49,000 square feet)
  • 54m (54,000 square feet)
  • 56m (56,000 square feet)
  • 61m (61,000 square feet)
Most new stores that have opened and are opening are 28m, 45m, and 49m stores. Several 39m stores will be opening with the inclusion of a pharmacy drive thru.

A 45m or a 49m store should be doable and realistic for Sumter.
