I've heard removal requires a 2/3 majority (I'm sure it's an interesting story how that requirement came about.) Is it certain to get 2/3?
It's not certain to get 2/3, but it's possible. However, the only reason it needs 2/3 is because of another statute that requires it (The SC Heritage Act, passed in 2000). As I understand it, the legislature could vote to change that law with a simple majority, and then vote to remove the flag with a simple majority.
You're being a bit disingenuous here. Without question, the state's biggest supporter of the Confederate flag and sympathizer of all things Confederate is Glenn McConnell of Charleston. Furthermore, the initial push to remove the Confederate flag in the early 90's came from state Sen. Darrell Jackson of Columbia and then-Columbia Mayor Bob Coble sue the state to remove the flag in 2004. And how can you blatantly omit the call of Gov. Haley of Lexington to take the flag down?
The Midlands have long been at the forefront to take the flag down and are hardly standing in the way. If anything, it's the other parts of the state that are late to the game.
You're absolutely right. Almost nobody in Columbia has wanted it there for years.
Good. I havent seen any. The perception here is that the inland reps are the ones holding it up. Glad to hear they're coming around.
If that's the perception, it is inaccurate. The heart of the Midlands, Columbia/Richland County, is as blue as it gets in South Carolina. Check the voting records for the debate vote today: 8/10 "no debate" votes from Greenville, one from Horry, and one from Aiken.
If you want the flag removed, Columbia is your most stalwart ally. Point the finger at Greenville, not us.
Well we always knew the upstate was like this. Bob jones etc.
Actually, Bob Jones released a statement saying they support taking down the flag. The more you know...
