I moved to SC a few years back and was able to take my job with me and work remotely from my home here. My "job" was in the NY Metro area.

My position is being eliminated. Question. Do I file for unemployment here in SC or do I file it back in the NY metro area?

I'm assuming it's here...and that the money will be significantly lower. Am I right?

Thanks.

If your employer is based in another state and your position is based in South Carolina, your unemployment would likely be filed in South Carolina.

The amount of unemployment insurance could be lower or higher dependent on compensation.

I would advise contacting or visiting SC Works, South Carolina's statewide career center system. It should help address general questions about unemployment and provide services to regaining employment elsewhere.

Thank you. I did go to that site, but I don't know if I will figure out if SC is right until I actually go through the process, and I won't be without a job until January 1.

Although the website has resources available to help in filing unemployment, reporting progress each week, and seeking work, visiting an SC Works location in person to ask general questions about employment is advisable.
