Hi all, asking for in-laws who will be possibly looking to retire in northern SC, somewhere relatively close to Interstate 95. They are looking to be between their kids (one in NC, the other in FL).

Any suggestions for retirement friendly towns to look at? They will be renting, not purchasing and have limited income. Also being near reputable medical facilities are a must.

The only place that could possibly put you in that range is Florence and it’s surrounding towns.

You say Northern SC with one kid in NC and one in FL. Not sure when in NC and FL but possibly Sun City Hilton Head (Bluffton) could work. It is right off of I95. I would also look at the Santee area if they are golfers. Also easy to get to I95 from the Charleston area. The Florence area does nothing for me

Florence area is your best option, it was rated one of the best areas to retire in place.

Spartanburg and Greenwood would match most of their criteria - Spartanburg is right on the Interstate, and Greenwood has an excellent hospital for its size. Both are pretty, friendly towns.

Oops - wrong Interstate, but the rest still applies. Spartanburg is pretty close to Asheville, NC, for more complex medical care.

Sage Advice.....When you arrive in Dillon from the north.... .. get gas.. buy a locally sourced Blenheim Ginger Ale and some pork skins.. the type in the grocery store zip lock bag with the index card label and handwritten name of the vendor on it..right next to the pickled eggs.. Those are REAAALLY authentic skins right there, likely gagged and bagged down the street...... then...quietly slip out of dodge......and continue driving south to Florence to live. Only return to Dillon to try the pickled pig feet and another Blenheim otherwise let it fade into your back windshield

Greenwood is far from an interstate highway.

Spartanburg, with access to both Interstate 26 and Interstate 85, is desirable.

another plug for Florence..... Schools! West Florence is probably the best public school in this section of I-95 in what is considered NE South Carolina. I believe their zone covers most of the urbanized area around the I 95 interchanges at least once you hit I-20. Western Florence is where most of the housing and apartments are in the City. South Florence, isn't bad either.. but a little further away from I-95
