Looking to compare Beaufort and Bluffton.
Retired, will pay cash for house $450-$500k.
Need healthcare and a good library, also a good church.
Like the beach and low noise.
The two towns are similar in nature, you'll have to drive them both and see which one works best for you. The beach you'll be using is in Hilton Head which is nearby. I suggest you find a good agent who knows the area well and give them your dreams and items that are important to you and you will be able to find that home of your dreams.
Beaufort is an older city with a central downtown with character. Lots of charm nearby with Lady’s Island and the low country and Gullah culture. But there are also some “rough” areas as with any older established towns.
Bluffton is a new town. 30 years ago it really didn’t even exist. It was just a community on the highway towards Hilton Head. But the explosion of growth on HHI has spilled out to the mainland. That is now Bluffton. Lots of shopping, restaurants and plenty of old folk with the Sun City community nearby. Biggest disadvantage is the traffic.
For someone passing through Bluffton over to Beaufort for a day visit next month, can any of you recommend a non-gated community or two to take a drive through?
We're retirees trying to gather a quick overview at the area. We're overnighting in HH on our way to Florida.
A lot of people cite traffic as a deterrent to Hilton Head or Bluffton. Traffic is relative to where you are from. I have lived in the Raleigh and Tampa metro markets and now live in Bluffton. Traffic is NOTHING compared to those places. Now if you come from a small, rural area, then yes, traffic is a nightmare here.

A “good” church is very subjective, especially without qualifiers: conservative? Liberal? Specific denomination? Big? Small?. You’ll have to visit and decide what works for you.
