I'm researching areas of SC to move our family out of CT. We're an active family with a couple young kids, who love to be by the shore, being outside at parks, taking day or weekend trips, etc.
I'm narrowing our search in on somewhere south of Charleston, and would prefer if we were within 30 mins max of the shoreline. Beaufort, Bluffton, and HH seem like popular and growing communities with lots to do. My one main concerns however is that many of these areas seem to have very small lots in large cookie-cutter communities of homes.
We currently live on a property slightly under an acre, and I enjoy being able to garden on our property during the warmer months, and having a bit more privacy. Are there any towns that are more rural or provide some more space for homes, but still within a short commute of much of the action in the other towns? Are there any parts of the towns I listed above that are more rural and spread out?
Research Ridgeland. The school system public vs. private might need a close look. Don’t know. But it probably has bigger lots and is close to the shore and Beaufort-HH.

Try Jasper County. Hardeeville is 40 mins from the beach - with low traffic. Everything under 30 minutes is developed/developing. Youre not going to find a good school system either, and will be lacking many good amenities. SC's rural population is bleeding, the tax base is eroding.
If you're willing to trade "rural" for "exurban", you can look at Okatie, SC. Better schools, better homes, closer to the beach, more amenities and more kid-friendly, and not every home is crammed together.
But still, you can try Jasper County. There's areas on the outer outer fringes of Savannah you can look at as well.
Ridgeland is in Jasper County. I was thinking it would be a less cookie-cutter, more traditional town setting. Hardeeville is catching on as a retiree place.
I'm aware. Ridgeland has nothing going for it and is an hour from the beach. Dont think Hardeeville is the best option either, but at least it and that part of the county is half the distance.
I get 33 miles or 37 minutes to Hilton Head. The actual beach would take some more time to get to once on HHI, but the island doesn’t look big to me. Or do Ridgeland people typically go to a different beach? All worth researching to consider options.
I used to stay on HHI constantly. The island itself is 41 sq miles, which is bigger than Greenville. It is deceiving and can take forever to get in and out, especially with summer traffic. The beach from Ridgeland is an on average ~hour. And that's with no accidents on 95, which, there always seems to be an accident on that stretch.
Disregarding all the OP's other criteria, Port Royal would still take up to 50 minutes to an hour+. If you want 30 minutes, which is the absolute minimum on a good day - unless you're Jeff Gordon, you can't go farther than Okatie.
I was looking at 35 minutes to Hunting Island State Park Beach.
