I don't see how my position can characterized as partisan. I said both men were segregationists and pointed out the discrepancy in how the media and politicians talk about them. I believe the majority of young people who grow up in this state don't know Hollings was a segregationist. They know Thurmond was one.
It is interesting to me that you are downplaying the number of people who want Strom Thurmond's name and monuments removed. If a Democratic debate moderator asked the candidates if they support taking Strom's name off buildings and taking down the statues, I believe the majority would say yes. Strom Thurmond is essential to the 'Big Switch' theory that segregationists left the Democratic party in the 1960s to join the GOP because they were mad LBJ went along with civil rights after his initial opposition.
The Big Switch theory is a core principle for most 'progressive' Democratic voters similar to climate change. Every Democratic voter that I've talked to about race issues believes the majority of segregationist politicians switched to the GOP. Strom Thurmond is their main example.
The only reason they talk about Strom Thurmond switching to GOP is they want to characterize Republicans today as racist. It logically follows they want to remove his names from buildings, lakes, etc and take down his statues. Hollings doesn't give them this angle because he didn't switch. Hollings contradicts the Big Switch theory, that's why you see the effort to downplay his past.
