hey there snakecotc so you say you are hung up on Fort Mill...does that mean you would like to stay in Fort Mill for the schools...just not in a subdivision? Or are you looking for areas other than Fort Mill that are close to Charlotte (or some other large city?)....and how close would you like to be to a large city? I apologize for all the questions but they will just help me with what you are looking for.
i should have explained better. im trying to get out of the state i currently live in and i really like the carolinas, as i have been there many times visiting family. i want to be in the country, outside city limits, but i dont want to have to drive half an hour to get gas or groceries. i would also like all the usual things such as good schools, low crime rate, etc. when we visit the carolinas we spend most of our time in the cities so i really dont know much about the county school districts or things of that nature. i would also like to live near a lake as i am an avid fisherman. i definitely do not want to live in a subdivision. houses would have to be around 100-120's. it will probably be a while before i can make the move due to finding a job, but i want to know where to look. another thing i should say is that we are a young family. mid 20's with a 3 month old girl and we want her to have more opportunities than she has here.

Okay...let's see...not to say it can't be done in Fort Mill...but it is getting harder and harder to find (in that price range). An area that I like is Clover, SC (still good schools, close to the lake, and homes still in your price range). Another area you might take a look at is Pickens county. I personally have not been there (not yet anyway) but I met someone (a friend of a friend) who lives in Pickens (young family) and they love it there. That area is close to Greenville, SC and Clemson (for future reference , homes are still a good value, and plenty of close by fishing for Dad! Lastly...Kudos to you for being so young...thinking about the future and trying to better the life of your family!

why thank you very much...I think I am starting to blush As far as everyone in SC being nice as I.....I think after 2 1/2 years of living here....maybe some of that southern charm is rubbing off on me a litte (I can only hope). Coming from California...I think I spent the first couple of months here with misty eyes...due to the kindness of others in the Carolinas. But thank you again for the compliment.
snakecotc, check out the Lake Wateree area. it's about halfway between columbia and charlotte. it's an excellent lake - not quite so muddy like some of the lakes in the lower part of the state. It's a beatiful area in the sand hills with great bass fishing.
i wouldn't want to commute daily into Charlotte or Columbia , but it's roughly half an hour away from each. The lakefront is fairly populated, but it isn't a very developed area. Lancaster (N) & Camden (S) are nearby towns.
I'm sure you could find a house in the area for 100K-120K. i don't think you'd be able to get anything on the water, of course.
good luck!
