South Carolina shops that have restrooms should decide to keep them private or public, not the government. Public restrooms in retail stores are invitations to shoplifters to sneak merchandise out of the store or other criminal activity that includes leaving dead babies in toliets.

County and municipal governments should look into adding more public restrooms that are constantly maintained and patrolled.

Whose reality? Years ago I worked at a restaurant in downtown Chicago with a public restroom that I had the auspicious honor of cleaning, and I never encountered anything a little scrubbing bubbles couldn't handle.

Making broad generalizations based on worst-case outliers obscures reality. Crazy things happen in public spaces, including bathrooms, but the vast majority of the time, it's just a lot of pee and poop.

Apparently, you didn't work at a store where some punk teenagers decided to urinate all over the toilet, the floor, and the walls one evening. My husband was a janitor to pay his way through college. He cleaned office buildings and that man has some DISGUSTING tales he could share with you.

As an employee, why would you want to clean a bathroom after dozens of people use it instead of the handful of employees? I worked in a restaurant and one of the evening closing list items was to clean the bathrooms. Lord, the things people did in there! The dirty diapers left in strange places not in the trash can where a normal person would put. While it may only be pee and poop in your world, bodily fluids are considered biohazardous waste. Not exactly something everyone wants to deal with.

That's a far cry from the stuff in the post I quoted. And I cleaned up plenty of gross bathrooms. Windex, ajax, bleach, and done. I don't see what the big deal is.

So you don't care. Many people in fact do care. If I owned a business and was forced to open my bathrooms to the public, I'd be really ticked off. I certainly do not want to clean up biohazard from others. I know many shop owners who feel this way.
