That is true to an extent, columbia's economy is also probably a bit more diversified, however seasonal effects may occur and the recession may have not completely ended although wearing off, although numbers are usually seasonally adjusted, it can be useful to compare year to year to check.

We'll see what and how South Carolina fares politically, economically, and demographic trends, I presume a lot of people in SC are retired and go there for vacation based activities, some as an alternative to north carolina or they have relatives who came from there and so on.

As I said, like clock work NC released their MSA unemployment figures today. The Charlotte Observer reports online today that Charlotte's unemployment rate has fallen to 12.4%, signaling that the economy there is stabilizing. Mecklenburg's rate increased, but the surrounding counties' rates decreased enough to bring the MSA's rate down. Reminder: SC released its MSA's unemployment rates last Friday, a week ago.

The attached article from today's New York Times surely partly explains the Carolinas' and Georgia's relatively high unemployment rates. Our job markets simply haven't been able to absorb all the newcomers.

I am glad you brought this up. Steady population growth is a significant factor in the unemployment rate of our largest metro areas in South Carolina. The fact that people are still moving here despite "lower wages" and a supposed "lack of job diversity" speaks volumes about how bad the economy is elsewhere. There is a noticeable contradiction between the words and actions of a few transplants who chronically complain about the current weak economy and other aspects of life in this state and yet continue to reside here despite having the ability to relocate to one of their preferred places. With their words they condemn relocation to this state, yet their own actions serve as evidence that the quality of life in this state is actually better than they are willing to admit.

My boyfriend has an excellent income...he brought it with him from PA when he moved down here 2 years ago. I, however, have not been so lucky. That is the only reason we are able to stay here.

The ONLY reason we are here currently is because I find the special education system simply outstanding compared to where we were from. My daughter went from an upper middle class area which was superb for general education needs, but lacked sorely for her specific special ed needs.

Down here they seem to have a MUCH higher budget allocated for special education, or at least in Horry County they do. I can't speak for other counties, or for other children's needs.

The Connect Program in the 2 Academy's is awesome and I truly recommend it for any high school student coming out of a special education program and into main stream. Even if they never get fully main streamed, the skills they learn in their programs are superior to anything I've come across thus far.

Kudos to Horry County Special Education system for giving my daughter hope and a bright future.

Well, ok there is a 2nd reason...I had a head injury with permanent nerve damage while living in NY and I find the weather generally more tolerable for the pain.

The overall quality of life are good in SC.........however the diversity, job opportunities and pay are not. Many who relocate here do so only when they can transfer with their company and bring the higher level of pay with them!

I know because that is what I did........the company allowed me to keep the same NYC pay to accept the position here in SC. So I had the best of both worlds........pleasant weather and low cost of living in SC with a NYC salary. However when one finds themselves laid off after they relocate to SC........that is where the problem comes in. Because as Columbiadata mentioned the SC economy simply can not absorb the newcomers. In other words the job opportunities here in SC can not keep pace with the numbers of people who are relocating here. The cost of living continues to increase in the north and other areas of the US......that reality is the driving force behind the attraction many have for a relocation to SC. That is fine as long as they come with a job already waiting........to relocate here without a job is asking for trouble.

Are you saying I should feel confident during this recession or any other time that I would quickly find a job in NYC that pays enough for me to make ends meet comfortably if I just pick up and leave Columbia for the Big Apple? Since you were born there and know the city, surely you would find such a job there even more quickly that I would. So what's stopping you?

This thread is about relocating to SC so I am going to stay on topic.
But being that you asked.......let's put it this way all of my friends and family members that live there are working, making more then enough money to make ends meet, none of them have been laid off. They are not running to job fairs by the hundreds to apply for minimum wage jobs and if by chance any of them should find themselves laid off there are plenty of different industries to choose from to find work. I own a home here so not so easy to just pack up and move back. Looking back on things maybe I should have just rented an apartment when I relocated here.....this way if things did not work out I could have easily gone back.

Besides the lack of job opportunities I like it here and do not believe in just giving up.

Points well taken, except for the concept that one cannot talk about anything tangentially related without being accused of getting off topic.

You would be surprised how often I discussed something that I felt was directly related to the topic of a thread and the moderator deleted my post. Our perception of what is acceptable to post on these threads and the moderators perception sometimes is two different things!
