I am thinking of moving back to SD. Lived near Sisseton, later Pierre and now in Minnesota. Could someone tell me a few things about living in Whitewood. A few people's general impressions would be appreciated. Thank you.

Default Whitewood, SD

Whitewood is a nice town-really small. I have an aunt that lives there so I go often. Not much there for shopping but if you want a lower priced area to live in, and still have the beauty of the Black Hills, then Whitewood would be it.

Smile whitewood yesterday today?

When I was growing up and in HS we would occasionally go to the Cowboy dances on Saturday nights in Whitwood. As I recall, the dance hall was very close to the hiway...which at that time was just the two lane hiway. The drunks would be staggering out onto the hiway. Everyone went back to Sturgis for that 1 am breakfast. Today, with the freeway going through town I am sure there is a lot more traffic. Also, with the really, really big motorcycle rally in and around Sturgis I would guess the close proximity of Whitewood to Sturgis would get a lot of spill over. Then, of course, there is that flow of traffic to the Deadwood Casino's. Maybe, Sisseton might be once again more desirable???dependent on what or why the move.

Well, have fun where ever you find your roosting place. Guess there is only pefect place and I am not about ready to make that journey, yet!

Jim Laws, from Rapid City, Rockerville, California, New York, North Carolina, and currently Arizona...but sure looking at South Dakota again.

I grew up in Whitewood but I have not been there for a few years so I know some things have changed. It is a bueatiful small town with a great elementry school, small town parks, and very friendly people. It does get a little crowded during the rally but I would definitely say go for it!

Hi. I am not trying to be rude but are you sure it is whitewood you are talking about? There are very little drunks and it is quite a nice town. Im sorry, I grew up there so I got a little offended when I read your reply-but everyone has there own opinion.

Default Whitewood is a dump.

If you are thinking of moving to Whitewood, I would strongly discourage you. It is a very dirty town. There are several registered sex offenders that live there and your children will eventually have to be bussed in 12 miles to go to school after they are done with elementry. There are no stores (other than bars) and roughly 75% of all homes are trailers. If this doesn't bother you - have at it. But if you have children or are used to living in relatively clean, safe enviornments: think twice.

Default Whitewood

Hello i am sorry but i really do not agree with the last quote that was made. I love Whitewood, it is not any more dirty then any other town. There is a school here for kids K-6 grade and then you get bussed to Sturgis which is only 6 miles. It would be 12 if you are talking both ways. There are two little stores here in town. One is more of a convience but a nice little one that still has lots to offer. We have all kinds of clubs and we are now starting a community enrichment program through SDSU which we will be doing more for the community. I am part of the board. We have 4H, Girl Scouts (which i am the leader and have 16 girls),Boy Scouts and they are always trying to find something for the kids. Tonight we had our Parade of Lights and we had i would say at least 30 if not more floats. There are alot of houses going up in this area and we are always welcoming new people to our community. If you need any info for anything feel free to ask away and i will help all i can. I would reccoment this town to anyone and everyone as it is a very friendly place to be. I was born and raised in Sturgis and then we moved to Cali and then Washington state from there we came back here and bought a house in Whitewood. Hope you find what you want here as it is a great place.

Just checked the Whitewood, SD Sex Offender list and there is only 1 (ONE) listed as living in Whitewwood, SD and the offense ocurred in Florida 2 years ago. I think Whitewood is a terrific little town, and it is CLEAN! Children can play in the street, downtown and not worry about traffic. Naturally there is always one idiot once in a while maybe, that dont care about kids in the street. I have been to Whitewood many many times and not once observed any thing out of the ordinary or dangerous.

I'm trying to escape Houston and my son loves the idea of living in a place that's cold. We've been researching the South Dakota websites but I really need some insider help. Whilst Whitewood sounds great, I'm thinking it's too small--I'd need a teaching job and a one school job market probably isn't going to work. Can anyone please tell me the top two places to live in South Dakota for a poor teacher---knowing that we'll be moving up their "cold ": without a place to live leased or a job secured. Yikes!

english teacher'
The largest towns in order are:
Sioux Falls - east end of state
Rapid City - west end of state
Vermillion - south east
Mitchell - east central
Pierre - north west central
Then you also have Sturgis, Spearfish & Belle Fourche - west end of state.
Whitewood, (too small) you are right. Dont blink eyes going thru, you will miss it, but it is a nice small town.

Bob
