Hi there - I may be traveling thru your state in November and if it happens, I would love to see Mt. Rushmore. For those of you who live there, or have visited during the first part of November - is it worth it? How is the weather? Do you get a good view?
The view is fantastic, regardless of the month. I lived there for 18 years and visited often. But the last time I was there, was in January of last year. It was chilly, it was crisp. But the view, was still the view. Maybe a little better because of the crispness.
Depends on how you are traveling through. If you will just be passing through Rapid City on Interstate 90, Mount Rushmore will be 30 miles out of your way on a drive into the Black Hills.
I think it's worth the drive no matter what, because it is such a great monument and it symbolizes our freedom and democracy, but are you willing to drive 30 miles out of your path?
If you do, take Exit 61 because it is the new Expressway that bypasses Rapid City and saves you all the time of going through town. Take Exit 57 to see a little bit of Rapid City and the Downtown area before Mount Rushmore. Plus it's the only city in a 300 mile radius!
YES, you don't want to miss seeing Mt. Rushmore. We go to the Hills often and EVERY single time we're there, we stop to see Mt. Rushmore. It'll exceed your expectations.
Last Aug. we were out there with some friends from NJ. It was foggy and took a few hours for the fog to lift so we could all see the monument. They were just blown away. They had no idea of it's size and grandeur. Of course, they had seen it on postcards or on the internet, but they were truly in awe of it. If there's only one thing you can see in our state, Mt. Rushmore would be the "must see" place.
To give you some idea. Each of the faces are 60 ft tall. If you stand on top of Lincoln's head and toss a rock over the edge. It will hit, 500 ft below.
Thanks for the info. However, we will have our small dog with us and it seems that dogs are not allowed in the park - just in the parking lot. So either we see Mt. Rushmore from the parking lot or from the highway. We do not mind paying the park entrance and just hanging out in the parking lot IF it has a good view. If not, I guess we could see it from the highway.
I visited Mt. Rushmore for my first time last year during April. It was chilly and there were slight flurries, but it was the most awesome experience to see!!! If you have to, take turns going in and take it all in. One thing the post cards don't show is the walk way leading up to the monument. There are pillars that hold each state flag and each pillar tells you when the state became a state. It is made completely out of granite and is very impressive. They also have a really neat store (tourist gift shop) to browse through. If you do get to go in and walk around, there is a trail that goes beyond the main wall. We didn't take the walk, but I wish we would have. Next time we go, we will. Its such an amazing monument, it would just be sad to get all the way there and then not go in an enjoy it.
You can actually drive past the front of Mt. Rushmore and after you curve around there is a free parking area where you see a great profile..
