I looked up Sturgis online, didn't like it as well as Hot Springs, just by my research.
There isn't much in Sturgis, year round, except the VA. It is a decent community; I have several friends that live there. There is an obvious drawback to living there for about 6 weeks during the summer...
If you're wanting to get into the VA system, take a look at Sheridan Wyoming. Beautiful country there, mountains that make our hills look puny. Smaller town, honestly I would move there.

As 4020 says, it's very beautiful in Sheridan. I live close and have used the VA hospital many times, and can answer just about any question you need answered.

Thanks for all of the info. It certainly is beautiful country out there, SD and Wyoming. Not that NC isn't pretty but it can't beat your area. I just got a pay increase on my job, so their making it hard for me to leave. I guess it comes down to which would be the best work environment. I currently work in something like managed care, coordinating services mainly for kids. I prefer adults and have training in PTSD, also a lot of vets in my family, so there's a little incentive. I was also hoping that working for a federal agency would mean some student loan forgiveness. I sure could use it. We have a VA center right here but they don't hire my licensure, only social workers. It's a NC thing. My job now is pretty stressful at times, but that may just be the field in general. The area I live in is a little too crowded for me, coming from a smaller area, but still not a lot to do other than shop and eat. How much of that can a person do? So there are a couple of things to consider, also being far from family. My family is in SC about 2 1/2 hrs away, except my brother in Florida. Just a lot to consider. If I knew the VA system would have it's perks and be more rewarding, plus a friendly, peaceful town to live in, it might be worth considering. Just a little worried about my husband finding work there too. We are definitely weighing the options, but like I said, we plan to visit anyway.
Don't count on the student loan forgiveness...a lot of that is being phased out due to budget cuts in all areas of the government. A few years back I was told that it was only for GS-11/12's in certain fields, which makes little to no sense, considering with their salaries, they should have no problem paying off student loans! Go figure! Those of us who could use the help after many years of dedicated federal service don't qualify - go figure!
My husband has worked in pharmaceutical manufacturing for over 13 years but has in recently gotten certified as a personal trainer and has begun to do a little of that on the side.
