almost exactly a year after our first visit here. DH and I are SD residents now. RVers, actually, so we'll be heading south for winter, but we have to stay here for 30 days to get our CC permits first. Not that I mind - my new "29er" is getting lots of use on this awesome bike trail you have and we wanted to stay for the buffalo round-up anyway.

So I've been wondering about something and can't seem to find a word about it online...

Do we NOT need to license our dog here? And if not, do I need to show proof of her rabies vaccine to some authority or other?

Cities and counties usually hold those requirements. Any veterinarian can answer and issue rabies tags and any licensure questions. And welcome to The hills.

I'm not from there so I can't answer specifically with regard to South Dakota or any of the counties/towns out there, but we travel a lot too. We carry a copy of our dog's vaccinations with us at all times. We've never been asked for it, but if anything ever did happen such as her biting someone (not likely, but you can never say never) we would be able to prove on the spot her shots were current and relieve any concerns anyone might have for any reason.

We carry a binder with the records "just in case." From shot records , to history, in case an emergency arises.

Heck, no - I'm in my home right now... on the doorstep of Zion NP. Last weekend I was in my home at Capitol Reef, and before that was Moab, Arches and Canyonlands. There's a lot to like about having wheels under your house! It's like being rich, with homes in all the best places... but cheaper.

I've been carrying my dog's old license and current rabies certificate, but no one has asked to see them yet. She's not due for the yearly shots until April, if she makes it that long (14 years old next month).

I traveled for the Government for 10 years and lived in an RV the entire time. I had my dogs with me. Not once, in all the states and places I went to, was I ever asked for a rabies vacination proof from anywhere. Like you, I carried my paperwork with me and always made sure it was right at hand.
