How does it feel to be in the other Dakota? The one that answers "what if North Dakota didn't have that boomtowns what would life be like instead, right?
No. They can have that mess. I deal with the wreck excuses of trucks that come through. North Dakota is a huge debacle. We are better off without that cluster ####.
I have a cousin who's been in Williston for the last 30 years. He calls it a "excrement" hole (not exactly his words, but you get the picture). He has taken advantage of the boom by renting his house for $ 7000 a month and buying a new house in Florida.
Unless you can do as he did and glean profit from the mess while not having to live there, my guess is most original inhabitants of the area wish this boom wasn't there. I know that I wouldn't want to live anywhere near there.
Not sure where I heard this but I recall someone telling me that there is oil in SD, somewhere between Belle Fourche and Buffalo/ND border but it is too expensive to get to it? Is that true? Just wondering.......
Pam
Yes, the oil boom in N D sucks for most of the people that are affected, but that is largely the fault of the N D and local governments which chose to ignore the information which the oil companies gave them about the effects of the development of the Bakken Field. I, personally am very happy it is all a few hundred miles north of me.
Yes, there is oil in S D. Building the Keystone pipeline will be a step in the development of those fields. Meanwhile there is some drilling going on for gas and other exploration. There is also a bit of mining for sand used in fracking being done but that is a pretty low profile operation as is the gas wells.
Fwiw, that old refinery in Newcastle is running 24/7. Of course, that is all the way into Wy.
Every other news article I see on South Dakota says they want the money, but can't get ahold of any.
ND is leaving SD in the dust economically. Both used to be the "little sisters of the poor". Now SD has that title all to itself.
