I'm currently in Upstate NY and am looking to re-locate. I've heard of many good things about SD, which puts it on my list...and some negatives - are people from Denver overtaking the state? Is the fracking in ND and WY a potential problem? Will the state change once the current governor leaves?

If you have any advice for me that would be wonderful. I included below something about myself that may help. Thanks again in advance!

- I'm a single woman who takes care of my elderly father. I work for myself and only need internet connection and access to a post office (if a fedex and ups are also in the area that would be a excellent). I'm trying to do a lot of due diligence up front as I can only afford to move once.

I would like to move to an area where I can purchase 2-5 acres of land and set up a homestead. Nothing too fancy - just gardening and maybe a couple of goats & chickens. I exercise my 2a rights and hope my neighbors would as well. Close proximity to state game land or good hunting areas would be a plus.
I don't want to be close to a city, but for my father's condition he should be less than an hour away from a decent hospital.
I'm a Christian and would like a town with a non-creepy church.

Coming from upstate NY, the environment near Big Stone Lake north of Milbank might appeal.

A lot depends on preferred size of community to be near. Ok with the nearest town being under 2.5k population or prefer 5, 10, 25k or more?

I'd also suggest looking within a half hour of Brookings or south of Sioux Falls. Maybe around Yankton. Or out west between Spearfish and Belle Fourche.

Non-creepy church? You may need to explain more to get feedback. If you want young, more positive / less stern or judging, then you probably want to be near one of the bigger cities. What denomination? If that matters to you.

The couple of goats and chickens part should be easy to fill in any rural area. If you want to garden, most of the land west of the Missouri is grazing land and really is not suitable for raising crops or a garden. With irrigation and truckloads of compost, you may do okay. I have been living in and around Hot Springs for 11 yrs and am ready to give up on gardening. I am unfamiliar with the areas that NW mentioned, but they should be well worth checking out.

Have you had some kind of problem excersizing your rights? I don't understand why this is an issue.
