ABC and NBC News are reporting wildfires inside the Mount Rushmore grounds and that 350-400 homes have been evacuated. I saw on the City Data weather thread on the South Dakota forum regarding the high winds in the last couple days. Close to 250 firefighters are involved here and the winds have gusted from 50-60 m.p.h.

This Coloradoan knows about fires. Last year my state set the dubious record of having the biggest fire in state history--the Pine Gulch fire. over 140,000 acres burned--11 air miles from my house. Lightning caused.

I saw this on Fox News (Steve Doocy) around 5 this morning. Newsmax has a sizable story on it as well.

With this ungodly stimulus bill set up for this perk and that perk there damn well better be a whole bunch of money appropriated for the firefighters, the planes, and the equipment. And I mean a whole bunch of money!!

There are three separate fires in the Black Hills. The news stories do not always accurately convey that. Usually written by someone 2,000 miles away that detail is easily omitted.

Then there are been some huge prairie fires this week. One shut the interstate down for several hours. The other in the northwest part of the state. I have a bad feeling about this fire season here. The prairie fires are leftover fuels from last year or two. Unless we get some serious moisture it will be a rough spring.

If the hills do not get moisture the summer has potential to be rough. However, 2012 was a dry year and we had a mountain pine beetle issue that did a lit of damage to the trees. The efforts during and after made a huge difference. The fuels should be more manageable.
