We are selling our home in CA and are looking for horse property in South Dakota.

We are open to temporarily renting/leasing horse property

What's the best areas near horse towns. We want to move to an area where there are equine vets, horse feed and supplies as well as the horse community atmosphere.

We want to stay out of tornado alley area

Hard enough to find normal rentals, but pastures at this time of year - even tougher.
You should go to ID

Tornados happen. Maybe you should just stay

The grass and hay situation is not around here this year. I’d look further west.

That's a pretty generic Question. What do you consider horse property? What do you want to do with your horses?

Some people have 5 ac and 1 horse, other have 5. Or, do you want 20, 40, 60, + etc. acres for a horse breeding operation? Do you need indoor riding facilities? Do you want an established, turn-key facility, or do you want a house, property, and you'll develop the rest? Do you want to grow your own hay, or just buy?

There are plenty of places for sale in the Black Hills area with various acreages. Very few will be fully developed horse breeding/riding properties with indoor facilities. Most people leave their horses outside year round. Nearly everyone will need to buy hay, and supplement with oats in the winter.

If you decide South Dakota is the place for you then visit before buying. Other things to consider: are you going to work in South Dakota? Do you have school aged kids? How close to a town, or Rapid City, do you want to be? Do you want open prairie property east of Rapid City, or in the Black Hills?

The more info you provide up front probably will lead to better and more answers.

Like your fellow comrades just go to Montana for the following reasons…
1. Lots of open land for whatever especially horse stuff. Look at eastern Montana the “overlooked” “not cool part”. But still lots of supplies to be had due to the nature of ranch land out there.
2. As I said earlier more of your fellow comrades are there
3. A chance of a tornado in Montana is extremely rare and less likely then South Dakota. There was a tornado that hit a town southwest of Sioux Falls just two days ago…..
4. Montana overall has a strong ranching community

Not Montana, it's plum full of kalis and new yaakers now. In two years they've managed to suck up all the rentals and drive home prices thru the roof. All that does is turn the locals against you - esp when you bring in a bunch of kids to an already overloaded school system. And, then don''t get rid of the beemers and other non typical cars in favour of pickup trucks - or worse yet don't change your plates.

Similar thing is happening here. Only it is the way obnoxious right, right, right, far right wingers here. The make look centrist at best. Or tilting towards a more liberal view.

House prices are obnoxious here, too. South Dakota has enough people. Thank you for your consideration.

Look at Harding county in northwestern South Dakota. It is right on the Montana border. Plenty of ranch and pasture land for sale. You just need to be fine with driving long distances to get to town.
