Default I've got one!

Sorry didn't remember the Dakota one but I have a new one----

The Sturgis HighSchool mascot is/are THE SCOOPERS. What/Who is this named after?

Hint-it has something to do with Ft. Meade.

Is it something we can find on the net or do you have to be alumni with the secret handshake to find out?

I read it in one of Bob Lee's books on the Black Hills and Ft. Meade. Should we wait and give uncle and jammie a chance!

Ok the others may be away or something. This is how I remember it: the town of Sturgis basically grew to serve the calvary (sp?) at Ft. Meade around the 1870's. The town was quite a wild party town ( I guess kind of like the current Motorcycle Rally which I have survived 11 of them--one year I did get out of town! ) but anyway the townspeople knew which day the soldiers got paid and when the soldiers went to town (Sturgis) the people of Sturgis would "scoop" their money from them as they were drinking, playing cards etc etc (you get the idea! )

Now that I have children, it is suddently hitting me that it is kind of strange to name your school mascot over something which such a colorful past! oh well! As I remember the actual mascot is a guy holding a shovel! But that's the story as I remember it! OK, who wants to go next?!!!!
