I really would like to say"safety" is my first priority living here.Poeple here are also very nice. There are not that diversited though. Also it's very affordable to live hereBut I guess people posted here are all like small towns. If you ask someone who likes city life then there would be no point^_^
Lots to like about SD. Feels like old west at time. Neat arts community that has its own taste. Don't mind the seasons. Well more or less. Plenty of pretty county to see. Not that many people.
For those of you who live there, you should consider yourselves very fortunate to live in such a beautiful place. I had been sheltered all my life in socal until I visited the black hills in 2007. It was one of the best things I ever did. Life seems so simple and laid back, and just an overall better way of living. When I'm there, I feel so rejuvenated and like I was meant to live here. I would love to live there someday and have considered it, but I just can't handle the winters. 50 degrees is freezing to me lol since my blood is so thin from living in the desert my whole life. Maybe a summer house there someday would be nice. One dramatic difference I did notice while there, was the price for a fine and vehicle fees. I got a speeding ticket in Keystone for about 20mph over the limit, and the fine was around $90. I compare that to the $200 jaywalking ticket I recieved here in socal last month. Also it costs over $400 a year to register my truck here, and that doesn't include having to pay to get a smog check. It's just ridiculous in my opinion, and not worth it. I would give anything to have been born and raised in SD.
Maxximuz, thank you for all the kind words about our state. I really do consider myself lucky having grown up here in South Dakota. Rapid City was always not too big and not too small for me. I got to know people from all around the area and made a lot of close friends, yet I didn't know anyone's business and they didn't know mine. Growing up in the Black Hills meant endless summers that were always a blast and lots of fun playing sports and just hanging out and doing nothing. Winters were fun too whether I was up skiing or just having people over to hang out on a snow day.
I bet it's weird for you when you meet people that don't lock their doors and say hi to complete strangers in public. For me, it was just a way of life. Even though Rapid City is a larger town it still had so much small town appeal and such a laid-back attitude. There were no Jones' to keep up with and no crime to worry about. The headline on the news was a quilt fair or a busted water main- something silly. I'm sure gonna miss Rapid City when I go to Minneapolis this August to start school.
Thanks! I'll be taking French for sure and probably Political Science. Not sure what I want to do but I took French all through school and my family has French heritage so it just comes naturally for me. I'm pretty excited to get out of South Dakota though!
Danny, I wish you the best of luck with going to school up in Minnesota. I have a friend who graduated from Minnesota and he has some interesting stories about U of M and the Twin Cities. Twin Cities are neat to visit, but I would probably pick Kansas City, Omaha, Denver, or Oklahoma City if I were to move to a larger metro.
South Dakota is by and large an affordable, friendly, safe, and clean place to live. It has its downfalls as with any place, but the advantages outnumber the downfalls easily.
Aw shucks Ma'am! (moving toe in circle in the gravel)
R_Cowgirl that was so wonderful! We love our state. Jammie summed it up well. Even for someone from West River! (Seriously they wear their guns on their hips.) South Dakota has it all although we think it is a secret we should keep.
