I saw this, I wonder where you can sign your name....I don't smoke and I can't stand the smell of it but I feel like many others on here that is it not right they can pass this without a popular vote....Its been proven that politicians only care what their constituents think until they get elected, then it is their own agendas .......But if I goto bars and casinos I could care less if people smoke, in bars I don't mind it because I'm usually pretty drunk by the time I get there and at casinos I'm too intent on trying to win money to worry about the smoke, plus I like to smoke cigars once in awhile while I'm at the casino.....I hope that they get the signatures they need then we can hopefully get a vote on it, then if it passes I hope people will let it die but I just don't like major decisions that effect things like this to be decided by only a few people....just like all the bailouts, should have been voted on.....just my 2 cents

It doesn't look like there are any petitions out yet because it says they're still considering them. That's a good article though because it explains how it would work and how many signatures they need.

Oh guys, it was starting to sound like fun, but with no smokes, no margaritas, not being able to drive, and everyone with dirty hair....well....

I find this very frightening. Obama has stated that while there are limits in the constitution on what the government can do TO you, there is no limit on what the government can do FOR you.

Well, our state (like a few others) has been trying to push their morals onto their residents for quite some time already~long before Obama even ran for the Office. One of the problems that we'll have if this law stands is where the lost revenue is going to come from.

Trying to ban abortion in our state has been brought to a vote a couple of times and has failed, BUT they're going to keep trying. Now I'm sort of neutral on that and curious about it, but the problem is that our state does not have the funds to fight that through the courts and fight the Federal govt. if our residents ever DID pass the ban.

How are things going, Homesteader?

The smoking issue, like the abortion issue, is one where many people have clear opinions. Personally, I am for the smoking ban for several reasons and can be very passionate about it. It would be a good step in discouraging people from smoking, thus cutting down on health care costs that the state Medicaid would have to pay, protect the workers who work in places and are subject to the stinky and unhealthy smoke, and and also protect the non-smokers from the dangers of second-hand smoke. Why should non-smokers have to put up with second-hand smoke?

If South Dakota is worried about video lottery revenue, then it may need to find a more reliable revenue source and one that causes less social ills than video lottery. Many people play within reason, but depending on the number who are addicts that are gamibling away their homes, finances, families, and jobs is somewhat questionable. I would rather have an extra penny or two in tax and possibly saving money due to a more limited access of gambling and a reduced chance for people to gamble their lives away and the taxpayers and rest of society getting stuck with the bill (kids taken away by the state, imprisonment, bad checks to local merchants (which should be a no-no anyways), etc.).

As for me, I avoid smoky places as much as possible (more so now than a few years ago) and cannot stand cigarette smoke. I do not care much for the smell that lingers on my clothing and coat after leaving a smoking place and the smoke irritates my sinuses and I often get stuffed up and my eyes feel like sandpaper as a result. I can remember during my college days being affected more by the second hand smoke than the alcohol and easily getting stuffed up.

Well Jammie,

Kind of interesting and not too well LOL. Not sure if I was actually hypnotized or not. Arms, legs, and such did feel numb as she said they might, and I remember most of her talking through the session and how she suggested that I Take 3 deep breaths and drink water (she is substituting the drinking of the water for the smoking urge) when I get an urge to smoke, and also that I rub my finger and thumb together as well to curb the urges. And twds the end of the session I remember her saying something about not wanting cigarettes or thinking about them anymore when I "awoke" but for the life of me, right after waking and paying the bill and such and heading straight out to the car to head home, I could think of nothing but wanting a damn cigarette. The Deep breaths, drinking water (actually stopped and got a bottled water and 2 gallons of bottled water at the gas station) and that didn't help either, neither did rubbing my fingers together. After a half hour (not inlcluding the 3 hours i was in her office) I lit up.

She also had said that its not gonna be a stop quitting immediately thing and that it could take time but none of the triggers (deep breaths, water and fingers things) didn't really help. I am gonna call her tomorrow and see what she suggests. I almost feel as if I wasted the 75 bucks for the session. The Guy that was supposed to do my Smoking cessation Hypnosis before we left from iowa to move up here told me his was 3 sessions long (if need be) and that I would stop smoking immediately during the session. I've heard this from a couple other hypnotists too about the stop smoking "immediately" thing. The paperwork she handed me to take home and after reading that seems more like this is a suggestive help group (but not really a help group) to Help quit smoking per se. She was recommended by my VA doctor but she's only been doing this about 2-3 years tops from my understanding. Theres another guy thats been doing Hypnosis for 20 yrs or so in Sturgis as well and I may call and talk to him as well about this "immediately" thing. Thats one of the main reasons I was willing to do this was the immediately issue so I stop spending money of the cigarretes lol.

Sorry to hear that, Homesteader!!! They often have traveling hypnotists stop here and their main objective is to sell supplements with it. I know a lot of people who have gone through them and haven't had any success in quitting. They get a guarantee that they can come back, but the hynotist is in another state by the next day. It's happened here a couple times and a few people have felt robbed.

The friends we have who have quit have ditched cigs, but the problem is that they're actually still nicotine addicts and use the gum and lozenges. BUT at least they've kicked their habit part of the smoking~just not the nicotine addiction. They sure chomp on the gum.

There is also a newer option out and there's a lady in Sx. Falls who does it. She uses a wand and touches specific points~like nose, ears, etc. We know someone who quit by having that done, but the problem she had was weight gain. And yet, we know of others who have tried it and it didn't work.

Do you smoke menthol? I've often read that menthol smokers have a much more difficult time quitting. I'd probably have to suck on a jar of Vicks if I couldn't have my puff.

Chris, as far as lot revenue~they'll have to do something more then add a penny or two on for sales tax. The last report that I saw said that an estimated 10 million dollars will be lost per year just on the state's cut from the regular casinos. They also get a cut from Deadwood, but didn't say how much that amount is. That's only the figures from casinos in gas stations, etc. They'll also lose tax on the cigs because people will continue going to other states or buying from the internet. And some people will quit smoking. I do think it's unfair to say that Medicaid will save a lot of money. Just because someone smokes doesn't mean they're a welfare case. Most of us have health insurance just like regular people. LOL I see a state income tax on the way because we already have some of the highest personal property tax rates in the nation so I doubt they'll hit that.

Thats one thing we talked about yesterday at the session was the actual addiction to nicotine and smoking being a physical versus psychological addiction. Before she even talked about it I told her I thought smoking was more a Psychological addiction than physical. My ideal behind that thinking is that if it was a purely a physical addiction and based on how much I smoke, I pop a cig prolly every 20-30 minutes (you could probably compare me to Betty Davis as much as she smoked LOL), I wouldn't be able to sleep more than a half hour at a time without waking up Needing a smoke. Yeah nicotine is addictive to a point and she covered that nicotine leaves the system in about 4 days after your last cig. So its the Psychological addiction (or Hobby per se) that needs to be overcome. 24 yrs of smoking and that hand to mouth action I know is not gonna be easy to break. I've managed one time a couple years ago to go about 2 days without a smoke so Maybe I can tough it out again and just beat the heck out of myself to get it done lolol.
And no I don't smoke menthols lol, never really could stand them, was like smoking burning air to me.

The one thing that I really want to stress about this thread is that I didn't want to start this off as a Smoker versus Non Smoker debate per se. What I really wanted to stress on this debate was the fact that this law being passed was just a bunch of crap in regards to a business owners RIGHT to decide for himself whether he should allow smoking or no smoking in his establishment. This business owner pays the rent, Pays the taxes, pays for the inventory, What right does the Government have to step in and say that he can't allow smoking in his establishment when it should be that business owners decision. We as consumers should have the right as human beings with a self aware conscious to make our own decision as to wether to go into a business that allows smoking or not. NOT THE GOVERNMENT. So we could sit here all day and debate whether we like smoking, hate smoking, Think smoking doesn't hurt us, Think Smoking Does Hurt us, but what it All boils down too is that we DO NOT need the Big Brother crossing the line as to what an individual business owner can allow in his business when that business owner is the one paying out the ass at times to keep that business even going.
