Smile Awesome Pictures

Wow Leroy - those pictures on both threads are truly awesome. I have to say that I also liked your caption showing the weather to all of us who want to live in SD. I've lived in the north about 3/4 of my life and even so, it is a great reminder to understand what we're getting into. Kind of the good (beautiful state and great economically) with the challenging (5 months or so of winter that does include some difficult weather).

I wish I could take credit for the tornado pictures, but that was someone else's work. The ice storm is ours though. What a mess that was.

I remember an ice storm in the early 1990s (WI) that sadly took out most of the city planted beautiful maples at the end of our driveways (amongst additional damage). When we moved, the newly planted ones were understandably not even close in size to the ones they replaced.

The big tornado I remember as being the most devastating for WI was Barneveld, WI. It hit late at night and was deadly. Personally, I saw one in the distance and one close by that was turning overhead sideways. I always hit the basement at first blast of the siren as we were at the very north end of "tornado alley".

Your pics sure brought back weather memories, but that's okay as we can still remember fairly well what we're in for!!

I suppose this would be a good time to ask (haha), Do tornadoes happen often in SD? More specifically west SD?

Honestly I look at those clouds and I've never quite seen anything like it! Scary and amazing at the same time!

South Dakota is part of tornado alley, but they're much less frequent in the Hills area. Many of us have spent our entire lives here and have never seen one.

Well that's a bit comforting. It probably wouldn't change my mind about SD but I'll be the first to admit tornadoes make me nervous!

I get more nervous at straight line winds and hail.

Kisses - for an understanding of straight line winds, think microburst during your monsoon season, only a much larger area. The winds come down at the beginning of a thunderstorm and when they hit the ground they shoot out in straight lines at high speeds, generally accompanied by hail. I'm sure the South Dakota residents can fill in with details and experiences.
