1) Make a small cook fire, anywhere in the Hills while hiking DEEP in the back country or hunting?
2) Cut little branches up to burn OR Practice shelter making (lost in the mountains type)?
Not sure if there are restrictions on this in the National or Custer State type areas. In the National Forest it may be ok, but I am not sure about either place really.
I doubt anyone would know if you were deep in the woods anyway, but I'm gonna have to say no. It should always be in a designated fire pit or something of that nature.
Fire dangers and the wildland fire system in place they state and feds take an active role in seeking out and knocking down fires before they become large fires.
They still use fire lookouts and aircraft. Once in a while helicopters with thermal imaging equipment.
Thats the bad thing about the hills... its like a tinder box with all those dang pine needles! Ok.... just checking! I got a nice big knife I wanted to cut up some campfire wood with! ha ha ha
The kid in me!
Actually.... I don't want to get it all sooty! If that's a word!
The cool thing is some of the campgrounds are fairly secluded, a strong day hike can get you into some great secluded country from some campsites to another. The other reality is that it is pretty tough to be much more than approx. 15-20 miles from at least a small town or highway commercial area in the Black Hills so the deep back woods by my definition doesn't really exist here. Sounds like a fun idea though! Have you been watching Survivor Man lately?
