I'm not from Brookings, but really like the town. Would have no problem living there if that's where I ended up. About twice a year, we'll take a little day trip and go up and down main street. Some nice stores. Of course, we always start at Nick's Burgers (yum) and work our way down. Pretty good pet / hobby store, and a good bookstore if it is still there.
As far as employment, you might want to give Bowes Construction a look. They haul a lot of gravel...they have around ten pits at different places.
Wow, i love books so that's awesome for me. I also like small food places that are not huge fast food chains. Sounds like an awesome little town. Hopefully i can find work and make it home.
Yesterday I saw the stats for April unemployment in our larger cities. Brookings came in at a 3.0 unemployment rate so it shouldn't be too difficult to find a job there.
Just to chime in....I've only been in SD for 2 years and never been to Brookings (live near Yankton), but husband & I are both OTR drivers. I would also suggest getting your Class A; it will open up that many more job prospects. Without any experience you may have a little trouble....but if you're willing to go OTR for a while (most local class A companies want to see 1-2 years OTR) you can check out MCT in Sioux Falls, as they will hire & train "rookie" drivers.
Until you do, with a class B, you might also want to check out agricultural work. Some of it is seasonal, but occasionally you get lucky & find an elevator, sprayer/fertilizer crop service or co-op that is hiring a permanent position....if they sell heating fuel they do need a winter driver to deliver it, after all . This time of year should be relatively easy to find a job driving a grain truck or tender truck....even if it lays off in the wintertime, it'll give you a paycheck & a chance to snoop around and find a permanent job. Good luck!!!
Ah i came up with a question. What is the typical rental rates in Brookings and surrounding towns say 15 mile radius? I am for sure going to need at least a 2 bedroom but prefer 3 and 1 bath place but prefer 2 bath. I don't want to have to pay more than 500$ a month for that and would prefer much cheaper...my friends tell me its "cheaper" there but they did not elaborate on it.

LoneWolf, I think $500 in Brookings will get you a pretty good place. A friend of mine is splitting a 3 bedroom townhouse in Brookings with a roomie and it costs her $350 utilites included. It's a snazzy townhouse too.
Thanks, i had read that earlier and have contacted the first one and they are sending me information. But the rest really did not have websites to be able to see how much they charge per month.
