BHSU is a nice school. Neat campus too. What do you plant to study?

Spearfish has some beautiful scenery in the summer if you don't mind taking a drive. We had to have car help there once and the people were very friendly and helpful.

A nice drive to enjoy some scenery isn't something I'd necessarily complain about

The winter weather here in the Hills is not so bad. It doesn't go below zero very often. Most of the time I don't bring out my heavy coat. It seems like it is on the upper 20's and 30's more often than not. Like it has been said it is a collage town and rentals are hard to find when school is starting. You will need to get a jump on it. Some students live in the surrounding communities and drive to school. This isn't the city, you will need to have a car. Most things are not within walking distance. Enjoy you will love the Hills.

Spearfish is a wonderful town to relocate. In the door of the Black Hills, the people are very sweet and down to earth, fresh air, and mild winters, but fun and eventful summers.

Spearfish is a very nice, pretty place with a lot of outdoor things to do. It does get cold in the winter, but not anything you can't handle based on your description. They get a fair bit of snow. You will definitely want a car. Outside of Spearfish, there are also lots of things to see and do. Rapid City has shopping, concerts and events. Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse monuments are in the Hills, there's the Rally in Sturgis and tons of roadside attractions, ghost towns, restaurants, trails and state/national forests throughout the Black Hills area.

Hey I just registered, I've been snooping the forums for a while ...

I came all the way from coastal North Carolina to go to school in South Dakota, here in Spearfish. I've never been to the state before but I have to say I love it here!!! Spearfish is an awesome little town. I get to go snowboarding on the weekends, the campus is nice and small and all the professors are awesome and accessible. I wouldn't want to be anywhere else.. Awesome state, awesome town, awesome school. I can't recommend it higher. And also for a college town it really isnt too crazy. It's actually pretty nice and quiet on the weekends.

for last poster,i was born and raised in winston-salem ,nc. i live in spearfish. mostly camp in summer. somebody posted too far to walk across town. also there are taxi cabs. however as a 69 year old lady with some physical problems, people say i inspire them because they see me walking from one end of town to other. i love to walk. however this morning, even with boots and treads with metal teeth,i went ICE SKATING!!! i almost fell except i held on to big willow limb i use when walking! snow comes and goes in winter. i camped in tent all summer this summer in black hills,sd, also camped in wy., co, there are thunderstorms quite often in summer. if you drive you really have to watch out for deer and other wildlife crossing road unexpectedly. also of course the domestic ones too. that includes people. drivers ,bike riders, etc do not seem to watch out for pedestrians anymore.

i forgot to mention, some motels in winter offer weekly monthly/ rates at reduced prices in winter, off season. some motels close down. you might try a motel til you can find something. i dont recommend coming in july and august as so many tourists, and sturgis motorcycle goers.also there are campgrounds which offer winter camping for self contained vehicles/campers as water is turned off in winter. i usually stay at bell motel in spearfish when i am between renting. also i camp at chris camground. there are others than what i list. good luck. you people who dont walk, you are missing healthy excercise. saves gas and car expenses
