Why is it every couple of years one group or another claims to discover a planet of varying size beyond Pluto?

2008 - Is there a hidden planet in our solar system? - Technology & science - Space - Space.com - msnbc.com

2004 - Solar System Surprise: A New View of What's Out There | Space.com

2001 - A comet's odd orbit hints at hidden planet. (Science News of the week). - Free Online Library

Lets not even mention the hundreds of doom & gloom web sites that talk about <drumroll please>

I've never understood the Doom and Gloom mindset. If you're that scared of what's going to happen why not just off yourself? That saves you from going through whatever it is that you think is going to happen and it saves the rest of us from having to listen to your BS.

They feel it's their duty to mankind to warn them of the impending disaster.

Personally, I think that it's more of a "share the misery" thing than looking out for their fellow man, but they'd never admit it because they don't even realize it.
