I understand where you're coming from. However, going to Mars is a tremendously inspiring and exciting goal for humans. It gives a sense of purpose to future generations who will be asking "what's next?".
Why do people care? Well, why did people climb the highest mountain or journey to the north pole or go to the moon? Because they could. It's in humanity's interest to become spacefaring eventually. And having another planet to call home is important for the long-term survival of our species (and maybe other species as well).
Besides, Mars has some fascinating geological features, like a canyon much longer and deeper than the Grand Canyon and mountains much taller than the highest on earth.
