Well what do you think? Is it a flower growing out of the rock? Many say it looks like a shell fragment. What ever it is, it is tall enough to make a shadow. I personally think it is quartz. We need a clearer picture that will give it some depth.

And they are sure it's not something that fell off the rover? If it's a mineral, why is it sitting up and not more embedded? I have no clue, just questions.
