Officially announced today. Potentially habitable planet orbits Proxima Centauri once every 11.2 days and is estimated to be at least 30% larger than Earth.
That's great news. Proxima Centauri is expected to live for several trillion years because it's a red dwarf. It will be around long after our Sun has become a white dwarf.
What's the point of it all if we will never be able to confirm this alleged "habitable world", and never visit it? This incredibly far-off place will continue to present itself as unreachable and unconfirmed. We can't even grasp the distance it.
This is all frivolous dreamland stuff with no value and no benefit.

In theory small probes can be accelerated to 20% light speed and get there in 20 years.
Yeah, right. Again more theory. Piling on more theory isn't helping your case. Show something tangible and proven for a change if you want to give even a milli-ounce of credibility to this.

Travel to the moon was once just a theory. Electrical power, nuclear power and solar power were just theories once.
The planets might not be habitable, but at least they can provide a source of resources for a space habitat and it would be safely out of the way if the Earth goes south.

Whether we will one day be able to visit it remains to be seen. Most likely not with the type of propulsion technology that we use nowadays, but there are alternatives that are being considered.

Proxima Centauri is a red dwarf and those are known for being very active stars. The other problem is that the habitable zone is a lot closer to the star which would in turn make planets tidally locked.
Proxima Centauri is a roughly 80,000 year journey with current technology. The idea of sending probes is romantic, but unfortunately, not practical. Maybe someday using solar sails scientists and science can get a probe there to do some science. I for one would love to live to see that.
