You are correct! The Foundation Trilogy by Isaac Asimov is the very best IMO. I also like Brian Aldiss and his Helliconia books a great deal.

I just started Red Mars. Good advice!

Jerry has a website, "Chaos Manor," that I highly recommend. I contribute somewhat regularly.

Geez, I'm surprised nobody's mentioned anything by multiple Hugo and Nebula Award-winning writer, Robert Silverberg (also named a Grand Master by the Science Fiction Writers of America). On of my fav books ever, sci-fi or otherwise, is his novel "Dying Inside". Also, Arthur Clarke's "Childhood's End". I think they're both among the finest examples of what sci-fi does best, visionary thinking and exploring "big ideas".

Silverberg and Clarke in the same post. Clarke was probably one of the world's best self-promoters, and Silverberg, by his own admission is the exact opposite. Kinda funny juxtaposition there.
I like Silverberg's style better than Clarke's, but that is personal opinion. With $5 it might buy you a cup of coffee.

Well, if somebody's only concern in life is about keeping things "consistent", it's unlikely that Sci-Fi is really gonna be their "cuppa" to begin with. Although I suppose even for the redneck types there's always the "hi-brow" stuff like Star Wars (and may the Force be with you...)!
