The hope of finding life on Mars is quickly fading. Methane plumes had been suggested to the possibility of underground micro-organisms, but a new study seems to be dashing that prospect to bits. The methane plumes don't last long, meaning the planet's environment may be too hostile to support life.
IMO, while there might not be any life on Mars, it's possible that primative life (micro-organisms) may have gotten a start in the early history of the Red Planet when there were shallow oceans on the surface and eventually died out as the environment became less suitable for continued support of that life.
